The iPad is 4:3 not 16:9.  If you are mirroring your iPad, then it will appear with the black bars on both sides.  You need to use Home Sharing to stream the video to get the proper format, if the video is 16:9.

    Have a nice day.

Not complicated at all, if you are simply streaming video just pull up airplay and don't enable mirroring. This will stream the video directly, in it's original format, as opposed to mirroring a 4:3 iPad display.

Thank you for your reply but have already tried this. I am trying to stream online TV from the UK e.g.ITV, Channel 5 etc but with or without mirroring it is still two thirds picture.

many tv's have various features where you control the image on screen at least both my old philips and my current older sony has

both the ability force as in stretch the image to be full screen making people funny looking and to cut top and button of the image to be able to fit the

non widescreen material on a widescreen tv

    The concept:

Airplay - Airplay in it's basic form simply streams the original file to the Apple TV for the Apple TV to decode. Therefore whatever format the content is created in will be displayed on your screen.

AirPlay Mirroring - this sends what you see on your iPad screen to the Apple TV it will always be 4:3 because that is the AR of the iPad screen.

Assuming your app is up to date: Channel 5 on demand (when playing content) always switches to AirPlay even if you have mirroring selected. You can check this by setting your iPad to use mirroring and opening the C5OD app, you should see exactly what you see on your iPad on your TV (in 4:3) which includes a section of content along the bottom, a viewer in the top left and a description of the content in the viewer on the top right. When you tap play in the viewer the content will start playing, the viewer on your iPad will go blank and you should see the content play on the TV full screen without the selection or the description described above. This is because it has now switched to basic AirPlay.

If you are now seeing space either at the sides of your content or above and below, this is because the content itself is not 16:9 and not because you are mirroring. If the content itself isn't 16:9, you can't expect it to fill your screen.

Thanks Winston, obviously a content problem as the ads on Ch5 OD are full screen and the programmes are not.
