Yosemite random Crash - discoveryd_helper[147]: Basic RemoteControl com.apple.discoveryd_helper Starting XPC Server

Hi Everyone,

i have a crash every now and then. Looks like it has something to do with Networking or Bonjour.

anyone got any idea what it could be ? I learned that

there is no more com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist in OS X 10.10. The service that controls mDNSResponder is now discoverd. The plist file you are looking for is actually:

/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

You want to add

--no-multicast
to the ProgramArguments in that file.

  <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/libexec/discoveryd</string> <string>--udsocket</string> <string>standard</string> <string>--loglevel</string> <string>Basic</string> <string>--logclass</string> <string>Everything</string> <string>--logto</string> <string>asl</string> </array>

Becomes

  <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/libexec/discoveryd</string> <string>--udsocket</string> <string>standard</string> <string>--loglevel</string> <string>Basic</string> <string>--logclass</string> <string>Everything</string> <string>--logto</string> <string>asl</string> <string>--no-multicast</string> </array>

but doing this (adding

--no-multicast)
disables finding and communicating with printers in my network and my timemachine backup drive can't be found.

..... any clues ? this is driving me mad.

I'm sure this won't help a lot of people however my problem tuned out to be my SSD. I passed the AHT (hardware test) and disk utility verify every time however it was picked up when I put it in at an apple authorised repairer. My crashes got progressively worse until I couldn't log in and then the SSD stopped being visible from the boot menu - which prompted me to put it in. just something to be mindful of if you do suspect your SSD.

I have (had?) the same problem. After months of using Yosemite without a problem I was suddenly getting frequent crashes. Sometimes multiple crashes within an hour. The only thing in the crash logs was the discoveryd_helper lines that tell me nothing. So I wanted to post my EtreCheck output here. While going through the results of EtreCheck I realised some old kernel extensions where still installed. Specifically AirDisplay (messes with the graphics output) and Boom 2 (messes with the audio output). So I removed these kernel extensions two days ago and did not have a single crash since (knocking on wood).

Just a note that I've also been experiencing this issue (freeze with the same two lines noted in the crash logs as per the original post).

My situation is as follows:

  • iMac 21.5 inch, Late 2013 model (purchased in October, 2014) with Yosemite 10.10.3, Fusion Drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M
  • Crashes occur once every 7 days (approximately).
  • Crashes usually occur when the system is in screensaver mode, or the screen has gone dark; at least one crash occurred in normal usage mode (iTunes, Safari and Mail running).

I should also note that I brought this system in to be repaired at the Apple Store 6 months ago for crashes (an erase-and-install was done), but my logs indicate a different issue then. Crashes since February (dozens of them) all have the "Basic RemoteControl com.apple.discoveryd_helper Starting XPC Server" and "Detailed RemoteControl com.apple.discoveryd_helper XPC " lines indicated in the crash report.

This is surely some combination of hardware and software (Yosemite), as my MacBook Air never freezes (same version of Yosemite) and you would hear about this as a much more widespread issue otherwise.

I have decided to live with this issue for now (since it's intermittent), but it's very unfortunate. My previous iMac (2010 model) basically froze once every 2 years; this system freezes more or less weekly.

Mattbell3: If your specific issue is a Kernel Panic, you NEED to take your computer to an Apple Store and then have them wipe it (You must back it up before that) and if that doesn't work then you have to have a logic board replacement. It can be quite costly without apple care I'm afraid. If neither of those work they should replace your computer. This wont work for anyone on this forum if it is the other problem. Make sure it is a kernel panic. Those are devastating. I had them on my MacBook Pro about 2 years ago and it wouldn't stay running for even 5 minutes. It took them 7 trips in 24 hours to 2 stores. I was just happy they replaced it in the end.

Perhaps I didn't describe the problem properly. The system freezes then a grey screen with some writing appears, then the system reboots. I thought this was a kernel panic. The crash log contains the same discoveryd error everyone else is getting. It's happening on 2 different 2010 Mac mini machines so I don't think it's hardware. I reformatted one of the machines and still have the same problem.

Interesting -- you ARE getting a kernel panic (KP is the grey screen that says in multiple languages "our crap software has failed you need to reboot your computer" or something along those lines 😝) -- ignore the dude saying it's a hardware issue...it probably isn't. I'd bet 95% of the issues related to this are software problems, NOT hardware, but due to the crap logging and debug capabilities of OS X, two same exact root causes can have identical symptoms and identical log messages -- i.e. someone with a messed up logic board can have the exact same log messages and crashes that someone with a perfectly fine logic board has.

Can you post your KP log on paste bin? I'd like to take a look at it. BTW, I hate to chime in once again, but I'm still going strong here on 10.10.4 -- no issues whatsoever after updating. I can not believe my uptime 🙂

Jul 5, 2015 7:02 AM in response to Shadowstrider

I'm not familiar with paste bin. Looks like I need an account to use it. I'll paste it here and hopefully that's ok.

Thanks for posting your KP log -- just an FYI, anyone can post at pastebin as a guest; you don't need to sign up or create a login there, it just keeps the forum here less cluttered, as there are already so many posts, it's often very hard to read, esp. if you are a newcomer and trying to sift through all the information, and get to the good stuff (i.e. how to solve your issue!) 🙂 But I'm not a forum moderator and I don't play one on TV, so I don't really care 😝

You have the same GPU as me, also interesting (Iris 4000), and you have the quad core mac mini from 2012 -- neat, I want a few of those! Supposed to be actually faster than the current Mac Minis due to only dual core models being available (faster at multi-core tasks).

Nothing stands out in your KP log, unfortunately -- memory corruption in diskarb'd -- *might* be storage, networking (network filesystem, were you using SMB or AFP prior to the crash?) or even USB related, but who knows.

I did notice though, that you currently have kext signing disabled (kext-dev-mode=1 in your boot args) -- is there any reason for this?

The only other thing I can suggest is that I see you're running 10.10.3 right now -- try software update and install 10.10.4, if you are able to, and as always, if you do update, make a backup that you can revert to if need be, of your system right now -- with 10.10.3
