Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:

1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the

COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the

computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager

screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

I have exactly the same thing. My Macbook Pro 2010 15" 6.2 is really slow after clean install of Yosemite.

- Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM didn't help.

- Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) didn't help also.

I have many graphic glitches and bugs. If I change Finder to Fullscreen or Youtube video to fullscreen I get black squares and the animation is very choppy.

I am very unhappy with Apple and I am back to Mavericks now. I also sent bug report to Apple.

As time goes on each new revision of the Mac operating system becomes more complex. Apple, Microsoft, and the lot can do this because hardware advances as well to keep up with the increased resource demands of the new system software. It is not at all unusual to see a performance reduction after installing a brand new OS. Now, that said, if after your upgrade things have slowed so greatly that the system becomes unusable then there may be other issues going on. But if it's just sluggish now there can be an easy fix. I recommend that anyone upgrading to Yosemite should additionally upgrade their ram memory to 8GB if your performance slows.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

1: you have Kromtech software installed: they have bad software and to do better they are the owners of MacKeeper: the worst possible. Disable the AV and Firewall, and uninstall MacKeeper.!!!!!!!!!!!

2: Also the Android File Transfer app probably causes trouble in Yosemite, uninstall and wait for an update. I personally think that you do not need it at all, for normal use with an android phone.

3: Remove both entries from the LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath.

4. Check that Octoshape is Yosemite proof.

5. Unless you really need Java, and installed it in a special way in Yosemite: disable it.

I am pretty sure that when the uninstalls are done correctly, your mac will be good again.

So basically it takes a very long time to open up applications such as powerpoint, word, Spotify. Also it sometimes freezes for a couple seconds when I switch between Desktop spaces. When I make something full screen like a powerpoint or video it makes weird glitches in the screen for a second then they go away. Also Google Chrome is slow, when it has noting to do with internet speed because I have around 50 mbps with the University of Michigan's wireless. It isn't bad to the point where it doesn't function, but I feel like I am using a very old dell laptop with internet explorer. It was a lot faster when I was using Mac OS x version 10.7.5. Yosemite is my first update since then, which I know is a long time. I have not seen any alerts or error, and I have not tried fixing it myself. I hope this give a more detailed problem with my computer thank you guys so much. Also I don't have anything backed up if you could post the instructions for that or time machine that would be great also!

Hello Mr. Davis,

I upgraded my friend's Early 2009 iMac yesterday (4GB ram). After the upgrade was complete and I began configuration and testing it was my observation that the latency I experienced was occurring during the handoff swapping from HD to memory. That process seemed very unusually lengthy. There were some older software applications on this machine such as Adobe CS4, although even when launching current pre-existing Apple software, as well as some of the new Mac software, 'Messages, 'FaceTime, Safari, or even paging in already running programs, the latency for those handoffs were unusually lengthy. I'm sure at times that there was sufficient memory available, i.e., I did not have so many apps loaded at the time that the machine was having to dip heavily into VM. The latency issue was also occurring when the Adobe products were in quit state.

So to me it looked like there is a problem with the new OS's ability to page memory in a timely manner.

In prep for the upg I ran fsck, SMART test, did a permissions repair, and a file back up of course. As far as troubleshooting after the fact unfortunately due to having to configure the machine for her and get it out the door I didn't have much time to do much of any troubleshooting.

My own experience tells me that what you have here is a spanking new bouncing baby operating system that, as all new OS's do, have some bugs that will have to be worked out and then patches deployed in the form of Apple Software Updates that will resolve that latency issue. While not completely necessary---> (based upon Apple's system requirements), I did however recommend that folks if possible upgrade their memory to 8GB. That can never be a bad thing to do and depending on usage and application load will provide better performance to the degree based upon usage & specs.

Lastly, I have followed some of your posts sir and hold you in high regard.

Best,

Tim

I was having issues with this as well, I checked the activity monitor and found a process "folder actions dispatcher" and it was looping from spiking to 92% of my cpu use to using none and then back, Ive been doing a lot of research on that particular issue and found a lot of people having similar problems since they'd installed yosemite. Most had just gone and disable folder actions, myself included after I researched and found it wouldn't be detrimental to my mac, and its like night and day. It went from extremely hot to its regular running immediately, its very responsive again, it isn't struggling anymore, the cpu load dropped significantly once folder actions were disabled.
Now I'm not recommending this to anyone, especially being I'm not incredibly familiar with folder actions, I'm simply offering up my story and course of action I chose to address the issue.
Some people had the issue resolved when yosemite was updated but I still had the same issue.

Yes, 10.10 is exceptionally slow. I think I have done all possible tricks (about 30 different) with settings etc, but nothing really worked. Only after I Increased ram from 4 to 8 GB (maximum) speed went up to something that was close to useful. Then I replaced the HD with an SSD and speed was back to normal Comparing to 10.6.8. So sadly my experience is that you will at least have to crank uo ram to preferably 16 GB. SSD helps applications to start up in a snapm and speed is then close to normal.

There are certainly many frustrating quirks with the system,

- colour labels are totally useless now

- system font is too thin and too grey. Very poor contrast, greyish font against white backgroubd. Very hard on my eyes

- folders do not open automatically when dropping files on them very very frustrating

- outlook invitations do not work in mail and iCal anymore, very annoying

- mail messages are sometimes received completely blank with no text at all

- junk flag in mail is hidden in a peculiar way

- in fact too many things and commands are hidden away in strange ways

- pages 10 is much less intuitive than pages 9

- etc etc
