Q: iphone photos in Memories or Collections are grouped by location photo taken, date. Exported to iphoto, they don't show the location.   How do I get this great feature?  Please?

My iphone 5s shows photos in Memories or Collections in groups labelled with Location taken and Date.

This is great.

But when exported to iphoto on my Mac, I can't get automatic location added to the chronological groups of  photos.   Why not?

A section explaining iphoto is below.   Why does iphone have this great location info yet iphoto doesn't?   Apple, do please make this possible!

Change whether iPhoto looks up locations using GPS coordinates

  1. With iPhoto open, choose iPhoto > Preferences, and then click Advanced.
  2. Choose an option from the “Look up Places” pop-up menu:Note: Each setting affects all photos in your photo library.
    • Automatically:  iPhoto looks up all GPS coordinates to find location names, and marks those places with a marker pin on the Places map.
    • Never:  iPhoto never looks up location names and doesn’t mark the locations of photos (even if you manually added locations to the photos).   So, why not Apple?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), Microsoft Office 2011

1 - Apple is NOT HERE so do not ever expect an answer from APPLE from a post here

2 - unless you give the VOLUNTEERS here information we can not help

3 - there is no possible way to "export" photos from an IOS device (the only place that memories or collections exist) to a Mac - you can says them or import them or share them - so you actually need to tell us exactly what you are doing

4 - why in the world ar you shocked that tif you tell iPhoto to "NEVER" look up places that it does not - - the answer is really simple - you said NOT TO!

5 - Places on iPhoto for the Mac works great - I user it daily - both fro photos from my iPhone and from my camera (which adds GPS to all photos)

How do you transfer the photos from your iPhone?

If you import them using a USB connection or share them in My Photo Stream, the photos will have the GPS coordinates added.

    Thanks Larry

I didn't appreciate that APPLE don't watch this site - so I won't bother asking them in future!

To answer your's and Leonie's responses, I simply connect my iPhone to my MacMini with a cable and iPhoto automatically opens on my Macmini and asks if I wish to import the new photos from my iphone.   I generally say yes, Ie, the photos are uploaded then.

I find it really handy on the iphone that they are grouped by the day's photos, with a geographical location provided, eg street name, sometimes with number, or museum name and city, eg, 'St Pauls Cathedral, Ludgate Hill, London', followed by the date they were taken.   This is really great when travelling.

But the same group of photos when viewed in iPhoto in the MacMini, are grouped similarly by the day's date, BUT THEY DON'T CONTAIN THE LOCATION WHICH IS DISPLAYED AUTOMATICALLY on the iPhone.  The iPhoto groups say "untitled event, date taken eg, 14 November 2014".

re your:   4 - why in the world are you shocked that tif you tell iPhoto to "NEVER" look up places that it does not - - the answer is really simple - you said NOT TO!  My response:  No, I didn't say not to look up places.   I do  have the Preferences> Advanced [in iPhoto] set to "Automatically', where the test says that it does look up places [from the geocode] and "marks those places with a marker pin on the Places map.

The mark on a map is not what I'm after.   I simply want the written description of the place [as noted above] as part of the heading label for the photos taken on that day - exactly the same as in my iphone.   It is really handy.

So, I'm still  after a solution to getting the location as the label for a day's photos  in the same way it does on the iphone.

    All help gratefully appreciated.

o.k., what you want is reverse geocoding. iPhoto will show you the place on the map, but you have the name the places yourself. The iPhone looks up the known places on the Map server. iPhoto does that as well, when you assign a location by dropping the pin on a map, and the place has no name.

If a photo has already GPS data, you can name the place as you like.

    • First, try the "Photos" menu for your iPhone photos. "Photos > rescan for location"
    • Click the head of the pin and write a label for that location, e.g."Granny's house"

You can create your own place names also in the "Window > Manage my Places" menu.

After you named a place you can create smart albums to see all photos with a given place name, for  example to see all photos taken at Golden Gate Park in one album, try:

    My, what a prompt response!

i assumed I could do sething like you suggest.

But that's a big job for my photos.

i Have around 1500 photos from a recent trip to England and Spain - barcelona, and hiking for over 2 weeks in the Pyrenees.  On my iPhone the locations of all photos in different locations on the same day were all labelled with details I would find very labour intensive to put in manually.

I had to delete the photos from my iPhone to free up memory space.

Hence would be most grateful for advice on how I can have all the photos in iPhoto on my MacMini labelled by location AUTOMATICALLY - or advice on where I could find out. Of course, will check out your recommendations when I get back on my computer

    Thanks again, Harley

Have you set the iPhoto "Preferences >Advanced" option  “Look up Places”?

With that option set, iPhoto will find quite a few places names on its own.

If this option has not been set, force the rescan:

    "Photos > rescan for location"

You will only have to name the photos yourself, if iPhoto's places labels are not detailed enough.

and even with 1500 photos many will have been taken at the same place. It will suffice to change one of the laces names. Then iPhoto will use that name for the photostat have been taken at the same location.

In the example below, I named the place "Ordesa Valley" for one photo, and all photos taken there will show the Ordesa Valley in the caption of the map.

You could also use an external tool. For example, JetPhoto Studio can look up the GPS coordinates and write the detailed address Information to the keywords of a photo. That will give you more information than iPhoto will provide.

    Dear Leonie

My many apologies for not finding your last response [11 Nov], following your advice and responding.

I failed to see  your reply until now, when I revisited the same problem.  i had given up when I thought you hadn't replied.   Hey, your photos are of the same places we went to in the Pyrenees.   Wow, how relevant is that!

    So now I have done what you suggest;

See screen shot of settings in iPhoto/Preferences/Advanced

    Screen Shot 2014-12-13 at 12.07.29 pm.png

    But when I select a series of photos [or a single one] taken at home and click Photos/Rescan for Location, the title for the photos doesn't change.   It still says "untitled event" as shown in the following scan.   But when I click the 'info' logo I get the map and pin with the general location, "Ku-ring-gai".    This title is too general to be useful if it were included, rather than still saying "untitled event".   Yes, the map gives an accurate location but the words don't match this accuracy.  The same photos taken on my iPhone come with the heading;

    "Roseville, NSW

    Victoria St                                             5 Dec"

This is a fantastic and helpful title.    It's just what I want in iPhotos!

Screen shot of iPhotos on MacMini

    Screen Shot 2014-12-13 at 12.18.12 pm.png

Leonie, I have a philosophy with hassles I find with software that is: 'if I'm having problems with this, I expect there are many other people similarly frustrated.   'They' [the software suppliers] will surely update it - probably within a year."

So given the great utility of the location naming that I get automatically with my iPhone, I expect that iPhotos will adopt this very helpful process soon.

Thanks so much for your help.   Unless you have a suggestion how to get similar specific information from my iPhone also on iPhotos in my MacMini, I will wait for Apple to provide the upgrade.   But I am now exploring Picasa to see if I can have it write the location from the geotag info with each photo.

Apologies again - and thanks too.

    Cheers, Harley

    Hi, Harley.

No problem.  Thanks for posting back.

iPhoto will not name your events. It will only name the places on the Map. You can rename your event yourself, as you like.

Early next year Apple will release a new photos application for the Mac, the successor to iPhoto - "Photos" for Mac. We do not know much about this new, future successor to iPhoto, but the few screenshots that Apple released are showing that it will have "Moments" like Photos on iOS devices.  So you may get what you want soon.

    For example here: https://thephotosexpert.com/tips/2014/6/27/aperture-dead-long-live-photos#.VIw88 XSppHg

    Thanks again Leonie

So your news of a new 'Photos' for Mac to supplant iPhotos sounds good and looks good from the examples  you provide.   Yes, I now realise it is the 'Moments' and 'Collections' on the iPhone which has the automatic location that I love.

And as per my theory, that if I have a problem it may well be solved soon because others want the same thing, so they provide it - generally.

So am waiting for early next year - for 'Photos'.

Thanks loads Leonie  - Cheers,  Harley
