The icons for my external hard drives have disappeared from my desktop. My computer is a mid 2011 MacBook Air running OS X Yosemite. The volumes are still accessible in the list of devices in my finder window. But they are not visible on the desktop. How can I retrieve them?

Try going to Finder > Preferences > General, and for "Show these items on the desktop," turn external drives off then back on again.

When I open the finder >preferences window, it is blank. I have tried ejecting the volumes, turning off and restarting the computer and turning the hard drives back on. Also have verified them all in the disk utility.

Maybe this will help someone. My problem turned out to be the icon, which was outside the screen boundaries. So all I needed to do was Clean Up by Name and the icon reappeared
I have this problem on a newly Restored SL system. I suspect it is the same "outside boundaries" matter but I don't find any "Clean Up" in SL. Any ideas?? Thanks.
Thanks it just happened to me and panicked as i have around 120GB on two external drives.
There is no option to "turn HD icons off or on" in my General Preferences.
