Mail flag icons are missing, shows color name instead

Thank you Striders. It took several tries and completely quitting mail at the end, but then it did work. I assume it will break again and hop that I can find your solution again.

IMO this is a big fat crunchy BUG!!!

I was afraid this problem wassome Apple UI person's absurd idea of making the interface better,like the horrible new Tags, and complaining, etc... but before posting I restarted Mail and the flags came back.

I love my Mac stuff but I must confess a month ago I set up Outlook (but I'm still resisting using it : ), because of so many Mail bugs in the past couple of OS updates. Problems with IMAP, with conversations bunching up unrelated messages, now flags disappearing... Tell me that someone is working on the bugs!

This work for me:

1). From Mail Preferences --> Viewing, uncheck "Use Classic Layout" AND the following:

- Show To/Cc label in the message list

- List Preview: 1 Line

2). Close Mail Preferences

3). Your mail should now show the flag color instead of flag name

4). Go back to Mail Preferences --> Viewing, check "Use Classic Layout"

5). Close Mail Preferences

You should now see BOTH the flag icon color AND color name, but you can resize the column to hide the color name.

I’ve noticed the same flag color behavior in Yosemite, so I guess this is a new FEATURE instead of a bug as I suspected. I have resized the Flag column as striders suggested, but periodically for no reason, the actual flag will disappear and only the flag color name is visible. If I close Mail and the re-open it, the Flags reappear. I still think there’s something not quite right about the Flags in Yosemite.

Unfortunately - that didn't work for me... definitely a bug, not a feature...

At first it didn't change anything.

then I tried it with quitting Mail after changing the preferences,

then it worked for.

This worked for me as well- I quit mail and after opening flag is back and word is gone.
