Q: 2014 Apple TV update fail after restore to factory, reboots, power off, router reset etc yosemite

MacBookPro mid-2012, 2013 Apple TV was working fine despite previous ATV upgrade failure a few months ago - THEN I upgraded OS to Yosemite and now atv will not mirror at all. Have tried, repeatedly in various order, log in/out, power off/on, multiple restarts, factory restore settings, firewall on/off, router on/off, repeated dl's and ug attempts, still upgrade fail.  As an initially optimistic migrator, I am beginning to have deja-vus of Microsoft beta-testing new Windows versions on trusting consumers.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.

It's not quite clear whether your Apple TV just won't mirror or whether a software update is failing.

Neither.  It used to mirror fine despite an ATV SW update failure. Now, since Yosemite UG, it will NEITHER mirror nor update software

That could be the result of a network problem or a software problem on the Apple TV, I'd start with the following.

Get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:

    1. Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
    2. Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
    3. Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    4. Open iTunes.
    5. Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

Thanks, Winston, this worked.  Yay! In the process I also discovered I had a bad port in the router but that was definitely not the cause of this problem.  I also learned that switching to a Netgear router 2 years ago was not the best idea I ever had. 2 out of 4 ports now bad :-(

Winston, thanks for this write up. This worked for me. Also used Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Restoring your Apple TV - Apple Support.

To others having a similar issue, i had to try 3 different USB micro cables on my Apple TV before iTunes would recognize the Apple TV in menu/file/devices. I almost gave up after trying two cords, but thought, I will try a third. It worked. I was ready to give up. I know the first two cables work with other devices, so I didn't think it was them. But it was... the third cord worked and its restoring now.
