Q: time capsule 3rd Gen WiFi dropping when heavy ethernet trafic

My TimeCapsule 3rd Generation is wired through ethernet 100M to my router. Firmware 7.7.3

My TV box is wired to a supplemental ethernet port of the Time Capsule.

As long as the TV box is OFF, the Time Capsule works OK. WiFi is speedy, TimeMachine works.

When I power on the TV box, I get the image on the TV, this means that the ethernet is working. Time capsule manages the trafic through ethernet cables.

But the WiFi is dropping. I still see the WiFi SSID but there is no more possible to connect to it (always asking the password) and if I was previously connected, I do not have access to Internet. With AirPort, the device comes up with a warning sign.

When I power the TV OFF the WiFi remains in this non working state.

Power off-on the Time Capsule and the WiFi works again.

Your TC is a gen5.. just so you know.. but it is the tall AC model because of the firmware revision.. that only works on the Gen5.

I am not sure what is happening and there are many odd things.. but the latest TC definitely has many bugs in it.. ethernet being not the least. I would be still blaming the ethernet for the wireless problems but you should be able to do some testing.

Is the TV smart type with wireless as well as ethernet btw??

    It would be best to

    1. Factory reset the TC.

    Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

    2. Redo the setup of the TC with all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. eg.

    Base station name. TCgen5

Wireless names.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz (please name each band differently so we can determine if the issue is related to one band or the other).

I want you to leave wireless security off for the first test. Turn on the TV and see if the wireless is slow or poor.. test on both bands.

No luck also lock the wireless channel of the 2.4ghz, try 11, 6, 1 in that order. 5ghz is not really going to comply with attempts to change it.. even if the channels are available.. it won't move because AC is locked to 149 and you cannot change mode to N only.

No luck with any of these then the TC could well be faulty. I would return it for replacement.

If you succeed add the security.. WPA2 Personal with 8-20 character pure alphanumeric password.

    3. Use the wireless diagnostics in the computer to see if you can detect other problems.

    The utility is very helpful.

    Hi,

Many thanks for your answers, I had the whole Week-end to "play" with my TimeCapsule and try different configurations.

    Here the results:

You are right I have a Gen5, sorry for the mistake.

My TV box does NOT have WiFi only ethernet directly connected to the TC.

I made the factory reset and programmed as you suggest in point 1 and 2.

result: I do not have anymore lock out of the WiFi when the TV box is on, but the speed is drastically reduced. If I switch off the TV box, after 1-2 minutes the speed returns to normal. A new device can connect.

I programmed the WPA2, same result. A new device can enter the password and connect but NOT when TV box is ON. The password dialog comes back as if the password would have been mistyped.

If I rename the WiFi SSID 2.4 to "xxxxx" I noticed that both bands are renamed to the same name. At this point I am able to connect but if I switch the TV box on, the WiFi does not disappear but refuse all new connection (e.g. second iPad). If I switch the TV box off, the WiFi remains locked. Only a power off-on brings back the WiFi to life.

If I rename de 5G band to "xxxxx5" I get the same results as above.

Channel changes do not bring anything.

I have another TC in upper floor on channel 11 named "yyyyyy" (it has also been reseted etc....)

If I rename the first TC in the lower floor to channel 1 or 6 and SSID "yyyyyy" I get a complete lockout of the WiFi as soon as I switch the TV box ON.

If the TV box remains off I can roam between the two TC on the same SSID.

I tried to replace the first and the second TC with a brand new out of the box. Results are the same so it does not seem to be a hardware problem.

Sorry to not having better new I hope these can help

    Regards,

    Ronald

Hmmm it is a hard one as the TV should not affect affect wireless if it has none.. but it sounds like it does have some incorrect settings.

I want you to isolate the TV from the system.. to do this you need another router.. it can be just a cheap one.. or borrow the TC in the upper floor and setup as follows.

Main TC.. wired connection to WAN port of secondary TC.. wired LAN port to the TV.

Now setup the second TC as dhcp and NAT.. this will give you a double NAT problem but ignore that for now.

If your first TC is running default IP you will need to move the IP of the second TC, eg make it 192.168.1.1

You do this via the dhcp in network options.. the main thing is that it is different.. this will still allow the TV connection to the network albeit you will not get everything working so easily but it will block the TV gaining control of the Network.. see if that helps.

If the experiment works you can get a cheap router more suited to the TV.. eg a $35 TP-Link.
