You cannot alter the firmware to make it 64 bit...that is hard-wired. You have to have a MacBook Pro3,1 to run full, dedicated 64 bit Mac OS X.

Other than that, you are set for Lion, but as a caveat, increasing the memory would be a good idea. While the specs say it will run with 2 GB, it is slow. Lion will use 1.5 GB of that memory, only leaving half a GB for applications so you will get a lot of page ins/outs as it uses virtual memory on the hard drive.

Great sources of maxing memory are OWC, http://www.macsales.com and Crucial, http://www.crucial.com

The MacBookPro2,2 can go to 4 GB ram, though Apple only says 2 GB...OWC and Crucial I noted above guarantee their 4 GB upgrade memory to work, be careful of others as they may not adequately test their memory. Definitely do not get Kingston Value Ram, Corsair Vengeance, PKNY, to name a few, as they almost never work in a Mac.

You will be much better off raising the 2 GB to 4 GB with Lion.

According to the MacTracker database and everymac.com, you can install 4GB RAM two 2GB modules) but the computer can only access about 3.0-3.3GB of that RAM. Explanation here:

Still it may be worth it to squeeze every bit of help from added RAM. Ralph's recommendations for OWC and Crucial are spot-on--too many issues reported here with the various "cheapie" RAM.
