Q: Thunderbolt display firmware update 1.2 won't install correctly

On Friday 11/13/2014, I received a Software Update notification in OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 that there was an update available for "Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2". I tried installing this several times, but every time it tells me "The Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update could not complete." Now I have 6 failed install attempts showing in Software Update, plus still the still to be installed update itself.

If I click on the "More info" button in the failed installation message, it takes me to this page: About Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2 - Apple Support

On that page it suggest to check the "About this Mac" info for Thunderbolt Display, where "The Firmware Version should be 26.2 and the Port Micro Firmware Version should be 2.0.7 after the update.

My Thunderbolt Display is currently on Firmware Version 22.2, with Port Micro Firmware Version 0.0.21. Why won't this update install?

I had the same problem yesterday so I contacted Apple Support.  Here is the fix.

    Go to:  support.apple.com/kb/DL1775

Download the update to your desktop

Be sure that there are no connections to your display other than the one Thunderbolt cable to your computer

    Install the update

Check your firmware versions and they should be correct as 26.2 and 2.0.7

The update will continue to show as available in the App Store but just ignore it.  Apple will have to correct this issue internally.

    Good luck.

This did not work for me. When I click on ThuderboltDisplayFWUpdate1.2.pkg from that download, I get "Alert - Please update the Thuderbolt firmware in this computer and try again."

My current Thunderbolt version is 22.1 with Port Micro Firmware version 2.0.7. I've also updated to Yosemite already.

My first firmware update failed. Is it connected to a MacBook Pro?? Open the lid so that the progress bar can display during install. That worked for me.

What failed for me was the restart did not seem to get the display audio recognized.... I was left with only Macbook internal sound in Sound Preferences. Stupidly, I did not reboot and simply called support. He suggested a restart and that brought back sound from the display and the microhone in the display could be used in Skype. BUT, iTunes still had no sound at all. It was open during the restart. I closed iTunes and toggled the sound preferences to get the display sound back.

    Hope this helped.

The update installed correctly for me after I flipped open my MacBook and ran the main UI from the MacBook's internal display (with the Thunderbolt Display still connected).

Is this what the problem is with my inability to connect to an external monitor? I had the adapter replaced thinking that was the problem.

Everything should work fine if you follow the directions in About Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2 - Apple Support.

If you option-click on the  and select System Information, you will see Thunderbolt in the list of Hardware components. After a successful update you will see a Firmware Version of 26.2 and a Port Micro Firmware Version of 2.0.7.

The key is following the directions exactly. I hope it helps.

P.S. Some folks found that disabling disabling "Automatically adjust brightness" in System Preferences/Displays helped to alleviate the issue.

None of this has worked for me. My 2011 17" MBP with Port Micro Firmware v2.1.3 generates no sound when connected to a Thunderbolt Display with firmware 26.2, (which itself has a Port Micro Firmware version 2.0.7).

Where is the most effective place to complain about this fault?

Try unplugging the display from the wall, wait 2 minutes and reconnect.  What happens then?

Be sure you do a complete power down and power on the MBP. To me, it is as if the MBP lost knowledge of the attached monitor during the update and so it sets sound preferences back to internal. After power up go to System Preferences, Sound, and see if the 'Display Audio' now shows up as a choice, if so select it. Of not, try another power down cycle. Not just a restart.

I had a similar problem: The "Thunderbolt display firmware update 1.2" kept reappearing in AppStore, even though the uppdate seemed successful.

According to Apple[1] the update was successful when the the Firmware Version is 26.2 and the Port Micro Firmware Version is 2.0.7 (visible in About this Mac -> SystemReport).

Above versions were correct in my case, but the update still kept appering in AppStore... (probably I did download and install the update manually after the first failure, but I don't remember ...)

To get rid of the annoying update in AppStore I used the softwareupdate command[2] on the commandline:

        softwareupdate --ignore TBdisplayFWUpdate1.2
