Is there a fix for disappearing app windows in OS X Yosemite?

After migrating from a 2008 macbook pro running mountain lion to a 2014 macbook air running OS X Yosemite, I have had the frequent problem of application windows becoming invisible. When pulling the application up, the cursor responds to buttons present in the application, but the window is completely invisible. This will happen to multiple applications (Finder, Word, etc.) over time, which requires a complete restart of the application to restore functionality.

Does anyone know if there's a setting or bug fix that can stop this problem from happening?

1. From the application's menu bar, select

Window Zoom

Some applications don't have this menu command.

2. If an external display is connected and turned off, either turn it on or disconnect it.

3. Open Mission Control. Close all desktops except Desktop 1 by positioning the cursor over each one and then clicking the X button in the top left corner. In Desktop 1, move the missing window, if need be, so that it won't be hidden behind the Dock.

This does nothing to help the issue.

Note that in mission control all the application icons are present, but the windows are invisible there too. You can hover over them and get a giant fuzzy blue box (basically the blue glow effect when hovering over windows is actually solid and behind the window).

Got any other ideas?

This is happening to me a lot too (so far just Excel and Finder are doing this) and I've found a only-slightly-less-obnoxious-than-restarting-the-app workaround. It seems to be triggered when I use a hot corner to get to "Applications Windows" (control-down) from a different program. For example, here is the mission control view of my desktop before things crap out:

User uploaded file

Then I click on another app (in this case MATLAB) and if I open up the "Applications Windows" view from there then Excel and Finder will disappear but NOT close. Here's the mission control view after the bug strikes:

User uploaded file

I've been able to get these disappearing apps to reappear by clicking on one of them, opening up the "Applications Windows" view, and clicking it again (or pressing escape). This will reappear the OTHER disappeared app, which I can then select, enter the "Applications Windows" view, and select again to make the first one reappear. If I have only one disappeared non-Finder app I can open a Finder window, hit control-down then escape, and my non-Finder app will reappear.
