Running vpnd on OS X client

Is there an easy way to run vpnd (i.e. VPN server services) on a Mac OS X client machine (i.e. not running OS X server)?

The client version of Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 contains vpnd, but you will need to set it up yourself; see here and here for information on this task.

A friend of mine tried this under Panther and it worked, on Tiger - I don't know.
