Safest keyboard replacement for PM G5?

Now that I have the networking problem licked I'm working on optimizing the ergonomics and space efficiency of working with both my Power Mac G5 and my new Mini on a small desk.

The G5 currently has an Apple Pro black keyboard (M7803… thank the gods for eBay) and a wired Apple Mouse. We used to have the older aluminum keyboard (MB110LL/A) but I trashed it somehow.

The G5 and I are happy enough with the current equipment, but a new keyboard with a smaller footprint would be nice with all the competition for real estate on my desk now, as well as being less tiring, more responsive and more accurate (I'm a very fast touch typist).

Above all, though, I don't want to upset the old man 🙂 so I wonder if anyone has any recommendations or words of caution for me on this?

Am I correct in thinking it is safer to stick to Apple keyboards for the G5? Or does it not matter as long as I keep one of the M7803s around for emergencies?

I have a brand new aluminum keyboard connected to the Mini… any risk in test-connecting it to the G5 to see if it is agreeable? (I know some of the function keys won't work, but that's OK… anything else?)

As it is able to do Bluetooth file exchange with the Mini, I suppose it won't mind if I decide to switch it to a wireless Bluetooth keyboard, right? I'd prefer wired, but might have to go wireless if I really don't want the long footprint.

If there's no harm in going third-party, what brands/devices do you think are solid for my purposes? My general impressions point toward Macally as the best choice, but I could be completely off on that.

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), late 2005 dual-core 2.0 G5

Not really, in fact I consider the latest Apple KBs the least desirable ones.

As you know about the Function key problem,,, no worry.

No, no harm. 🙂

Oh, dear. I wish I were surprised by that comment. In what way(s) do you feel the keyboards have declined?

OK. It seems to me back in the day, I read a lot of stories about bad commands or data from malfunctioning keyboards causing Macs to seriously freak out. So that's why I'm uneasy about this.

Thanks again for your advice. Not many left out there able or willing to guide the likes of me 🙂 including Apple store personnel. Most of them in my recent experience are so young and so blasé that they seem to have barely a clue what you're talking about when you mention using a Power Mac G5—or how amazing it is that the thing still gets out of bed in the morning, so to speak. The company has an extraordinary history, but the staff I've talked to lately haven't been schooled in it much.

I wonder if they might only use iPhones & have no computer experience other than what they've seen in the Apple Store they work in!???

Seems highly possible to me. As I was saying to my dad (who taught me about personal computers via his Apple II and Mac Plus 🙂 ) the other day, the younger users are quite addicted to portability and that's one of the main reasons product lines have changed so much. (I'm finding the same is true of external drives.)

It does seem especially wonky at the moment. Appreciate the invite, didn't realize you had your own hangout. Making a note to look into it as soon as I get some things done NOT involving computers, LOL. Too bad I wasn't already a member when I got the Mini—maybe something in your community would have reminded me that MY G5 HAS AN AIRPORT CARD 😊 (which I just realized this morning… haven't attempted to add it to my home wifi network yet, but it does see it, and I assume it would have worked, re: my other recent thread where you helped me out). The adventure continues… happy to have new territory to explore even if I make a donkey of myself doing it.

Glad to see you signed up, hope you got in OK without checking the "I am human" box... we like to work with sentient beings! 😉

Sadly, many great helpers here have given up since often posts do not show up, even hotting Last Reply, pics may disappear, you might get logged out at any time, & no easy way to see who last posted in a thread without opening every one. 😠
