How do I bind the Time Machine app to eth1 leaving eth0 for all other traffic?

Hi All,

I have just replaced a Synology NAS device with a new QNAP and one of the nice benefits is the QNAP has multiple ethernet ports...and so does the OS X system. How can I bind the Time Machine app/traffic to a specific eth(x) port and thus keep all the backup traffic separate from normal traffic?

Cheers

Yes. I hate that spell checker. You are seeing what it thought I wanted to say which both of us know is not quite what I had in mind.

I know your question is phrased as to how to configure the network, my point is even if you do fix the network the NAS storage will probably still have problems with Time Machine. A number of vendors claim their NAS will work with but this not what Apple says nor has it been my experience either.

I wish I had a NAS and a Mac with dual NIC's to reach out better with your question. I would suggest opening Terminal.app and as the administrator take a look at pfctl. Specifically - $ man pfctl .This is part of the BSD framework that OS X utilizes, which might be a further hint to where you could find more information on your subject.

Of course I suppose asking QNAP how to implement their NAS could also lead to an answer. They are the experts in your situation.

Best of luck

Hi Allan,

Time Machine is working fine, the problem is its working too well and swamping my en0 network which is the interface I use for all other traffic. As the Mac has another interface I'm looking to move the traffic over to en1. Further investigations suggests route add may help. I think I can add a route that says to talk to the nas use interface en1. Now I just need the time to play with it.

cheers,
