My time capsule says "there isn't enough space" o

My time capsule shows a message on my imac stating there isn't enough space so backup failed. I thought the old backups automatically deleted to make room for the new ones. IT says 354 Gb of 998 GB available. I also dowloaded Yosemite 10.10 recently so not sure fi that is a problem too. How do I back up properly?
