Accidentally unplugged my external hard drive without ejecting, no longer visible

I accidentally unplugged my external hard drive from the computer without ejecting, now it isn't showing up on the desktop or connecting directly to my Time Machine. It was in the middle of backup. Help?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), iOS 8.1

Consider it's directory 'gone' or unable to mount and load contents. Which is why you should always have at least two backups - the one you are using and an additional backup set that is off line. I prefer to clone everything in addition to TimeMachine.

Sometimes a 3rd party can mount or attempt to repair, but you should not assume it will then be usable, just backup and off load whatever files you need and can and then erase and restore.

Disk Warrior is $99

Data Rescue (v. 4 I think is current) is free as demo to see if it finds files but is then also $99

A disk drive of 2TB would run around $99 also

My problem isn't with mounting. It's UNmounting. Disk Utility says that it's there but I have no way of accessing it. I even attempted to erase and restore but it keeps prompting me with the 'files and applications need to be closed in order to unmount.' I cannot unmount it. There is no way to even see that it is being recognized other than through the Disk Utility.
