Bootcamp unrecognized after restoring Windows from system image

A had a major failure (not sure exactly what happened) that resulted in me not being able to boot into OS X Yosemite, but my Bootcamp partition worked fine. After a long process, complicated by other issues, I had to wipe the drive reinstall Yosemite, restore from my Time Machine backup, and reinstall Windows via Bootcamp.

The final step in the process was to restore my Windows partition from a system image. The system image was made with Window's built-in utility, and was restored via a Windows repair disc created with a built-in utility. No 3rd party software used, and no 3rd party NTFS software on my Mac.

I have now restored, and the Bootcamp partition itself works fine. However, Mac OS doesn't recognize it. It doesn't appear in my sidebar. In Disk Utility it shows up greyed out (and I can't mount it) and it is named "disk0s4" instead of "BOOTCAMP". I also cannot select it as my startup disk in System Preferences. I CAN start up my computer holding the option key and select the drive.

I think I might know what the problem is. When restoring Windows from the system image I was forced to reformat and repartition my drive as part of the process, but I couldn't chose what format I wanted (it claims it formatted and partitioned my drive, but OS X was unaffected). After the restore, my Windows partition is FAT (I'm pretty sure it was NTFS before). My system image is NTFS, so I'm not sure why this happened.

Has anyone run into this before? Does anyone know how I can restore Windows from a system image and have it format my drive as NTFS? Or is there another way to solve this problem? It has been a long week without a functioning computer, and I am 95% of the way back to where I started. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Okay, I finally got a chance to get back to this. Computer is back to the state just before restoring Windows from the system image (Boot Camp and clean install of Windows in place). If I understand what you are telling me correctly, I will be able to repair my GPT using the information below after restoring Windows from a system image (which seems to be damaging the GPT). Anything else I need before going through with it? It there any chance I would overwrite/corrupt any of the data on the OS X side by doing the Windows system image restore, or just the GPT header?

This is what I suggest.

1. Fix the current MBR using

sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0

setpid 2

2. Create a new GPT using start/size from the current MBR using Gdisk. We will use Size (not End sectors). Please be aware that his can lead to catastrophic data loss, so make sure you have good backups of OSX and Windows.

Why recreate the GPT based on the MBR, rather than the other way around? It looks like the GPT hasn't changed from before to after based on the start sectors. I just don't like the idea of having boot camp reach out and impact the Mac side of my computer rather than stay in the box the Mac created for it (the Boot Camp partition). I'm happy to give it a try given that I have good backups, but os there a compelling reason to do it the way you suggest rather than the other way around? Thanks.

In the 'Before' the GPT and MBR are perfectly aligned.

1. The native GPT command does not work.

2. In the 'After' MBR, you have differences. These can cause potential data corruption in the future.

3. Before any further MBR/GPT changes are made, give Windows a try and see what happens.

4. See this table, and the differential is 225MB.

Just tested out Windows. The situation is exactly as before, Windows seems to be working fine other than not being recognized from the Mac side (and the issues shown in the Samsung Magician screenshot I posted before).

I still don't understand why we can't use the GPT to rebuilt the MBR, instead of doing it the other way around, or the hierarchy between the two partition types (if there is one), but I'll give those commands a try tomorrow and let you know how it goes. I'm very concerned about losing data on the Mac side and potentially not realizing it until months from now...

Thanks for sticking this out.

The MBR is used by Windows and it works after the restore. As a test, you can rebuild the MBR from GPT, and make sure Windows works. The 225MB differential may cause the Bootloader/manager not to work. Since you have posted your MBR, it can be reconstructed if there are issues.

Do you see the Bootcamp Volume and files in it on the OSX Finder currently as things stand?

Here's what I did and the result. Restarting now to see if it worked.

OK; writing new GUID partition table (GPT) to /dev/disk0.

Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their

partition table automatically reloaded!

Warning: The kernel may continue to use old or deleted partitions.

You should reboot or remove the drive.

Observations:

  • Initial startup after changes was slow, but subsequent restarts seemed normal
  • Bootcamp appears in Finder and as a startup disk
  • Recovery Drive no longer appears as a startup option (in System Preferences or when starting up holding option)
  • Disk Utility reports that my hard drive has an unrecognized file system, won't allow repair
  • Mac partition required repair of header (which I did)
  • Windows generally seems to work okay. I tried opening several Excel files, most of which took way longer to open (or didn't seem to open at all until I tried again).
  • Same problem seem in Samsung Magician

I think I might have to restore the Windows System image from the Mac side (after reinstalling, restoring Mac OS, and formatting drive with Bootcamp). Any idea how I could do that? Or any other ideas? Maybe getting back to the same point I was a little while ago and rebuilding the MBR instead of the GPT (not sure why that would work).

Could this be a hardware failure?
