    Sorry to be late.

-- 2GB of Ram is the absolute bare minimum to run anything OS above Snow Leopard. You should add Ram.

-- You have the software that came with your external disks installed: that is very counterproductive with the mac. You must uninstall it, use the uninstallers.

-- Your mac has been infected by very bad malware: Spigot and Genieo. These have to be removed asap:

    read  http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/

    and   http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-spigot/

-- delete all Safari extensions (safari->preferences->extensions)

    -- update flashplayer

-- remove all entries in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath. This will not uninstall these, but prevent that that are started with system startup and thus running all the time.

This is most of it. There are also some Yosemite incompatible apps and tools.

    Hi Lex,

I really appreciate your response. I followed your recommendations and I can definitely feel my computer is running faster.

Here is my new report. Besides the RAM upgrade (which I'm waiting to get in the mail), is there anything else you recommend?

good work. it looks as if the Spigot and Genieo malware is removed correctly. This were the main culprits.

Be careful with the Ram, and make sure that they are firmly seated.

But remnants of your external disk software are still there:

-- In Finder go to  MacintoshHD->Library->Extensions in there delete all files  that have   wdc    in it (6).

I strongly propose the remove one file with   alsop     also, and then uninstall  DiskWarrior (with its uninstaller): you do not need that tool.

keep up, post your results after these actions.

Hi Lex, things were going so well but I think I messed up somewhere along the way and deleted something I was not supposed to. My computer now only boots in safe mode (I get the spinning color wheel for hours when in regular mode). Also, I'm worried about all the "failed" components in my new test:

    Marcela,

there is still incompatible software, like what came with the Samsung, and Roxio, and Maxtor.., but that is very probably not the cause.

    Don't worry about 'failed'.

What happens when you disconnect the external drives and start up normally, still the same?

You can also start the mac while holding the CMD+R keys, and choose DiskUtility from the menubar, then choose the Hitachi startup disk and do 'Verify Disk' (not 'verify disk permissions');  if it does not end with 'OK', do 'Repair Disk' and see what that gives, if it does not end with OK, do the repair again.

    Waiting for your response.

    Lex

    Hi Lex,

I repaired the disk and now my computer starts up fine, as long as the external drives are not connected. If they're connected, it freezes. Any idea what's causing that??

Here is my new report. I'm having a hard time finding the roxio extensions to delete.

(keep in mind that you have to upgrade ram in the near future).

There is still software on your mac, that is not Yosemite compatible: Roxio (not the cause of your disk issue)

When you connect only the external disk WD (WesternDigital), any problems? (I don't think so).

When you connect only the Initio disk, freeze? I have no experience with the Initio Inic-1610 disks: it may be a bad Sata-USB connector or cable, it may be that the driver is damaged, it may be that the driver is not Yosemite compatible. You could try another USB port on your mac. How old is that disk? Can you contact the people that sold it to you?

    Hi Lex!

I've upgraded RAM to 8gb and it made a huge difference. I also uninstalled Toast as that is the only way I found to get rid of the Roxio remnants. Right now I have only one external disk connected (WD) and the computer is running smoothly.

    This looks OK.

    I recommend still one treatment:

Take both entries out in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath. Then restart.

this prevents these apps running all the time, you should start Reader by hand.

The other one, AdobeResourceSynchronizer should never run, it is crap.

    Note:

'Preview' in Yosemite is even better as in Mavericks. Is there a real need for Adobe Reader?.
