Use external hard drive as internal

Hi! I'm on a photography workshop in Barcelona and of course my macbook (pro mid2012) crashed three days ago. It feels like I've tried everything at this moment and i'm starting to run out of time and I really need to be able to work on my macbook. It says that the harddrive is locked when trying to re-install os x. So my question is: Can I use an external harddrive (Toshiba Stor.E Slim) as an internal and then be able to use my macbook? And the try to fix my broken internal hard drive and the files on there when I get home?

Thankful for all help!

Unless you have the tools to open the computer and then remove/replace the HDD, it may be easier to simply use the external drive as your boot drive assuming you have a way to install OS X on it. After you install OS X onto the external drive you boot it this way:

Boot Using OPTION key:

1. Restart the computer.

2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the

"OPTION" key.

3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.

4. Select the disk icon for the external HDD.

5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

Once you startup from the external drive you can set it as the startup drive using Startup Disk preferences.

What are you presently using as a computer?

Do you carry an OS X installer with you when you travel? If you don't, then the external drive is useless to you unless you have a computer that was made in 2011 or later and can use Internet Recovery. If you do, then you need a solid Internet connection - preferably Ethernet because it's much faster than Wi-Fi. If you can do this, then check this article: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If your model is OK for Internet Recovery, then follow these instructions:

Install OS X Using Internet Recovery

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.

Partition and Format the hard drive:

  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
  3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
