mac.com mail opens but is frozen i.e. nothing works

My macbook 2008 OS10.7.5 mac.com mail v5.3 opens but is frozen i.e. nothing works. Cannot get to mail settings to see if the problem is there. Have run diskUtility, tried "help" - nothing. Is this such a weird problem no one has heard of it?

MacBook (13-inch Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.7.5), 2.4 ghz,intelcor 2 duo

It might be a setting in Mail that is wrong. I seem to remember recently i had to change it from iCloud to the old setting I used in past. It had been working for a year on the icloud setting and suddenly, nogo with no warning. So wonder what gives?
