I am using Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite). I am trying to install VMware Fusion 3 and I am getting an error that says "The kernel could not be located. Please restore the /mach_kernel file from your Mac OS X install disc." I don't have an install disc, as it never came with my Mac Air. I open up Terminal and I run the command "ls -la /" I do not see a mach_kernel file. How do I get this file?

You may need to upgrade your software. VMware Fusion 3 is getting a bit old; Fusion 7 specifcally supports Yosemite. Fusion 3 does not. From the vmware KB:

If you can boot your system then you definitely have a mach_kernel file.
VMware Fusion 3 doesn't run on OS X Yosemite. You need to update to the latest version (6 I think?).
There is no mach_kernel file in Yosemite. The software you're trying to install is obsolete.
I am receiving the exact same message running El Capitan and the latest VMWare download. So, I don't buy the 'outdated or obsolete' software reply.
Does anyone know the real answer, please?

You can't restore something that hasn't existed since Mavericks, 10.9.x. If third party software you need insists on its presence to install or run, then you're going to have to either upgrade the third party software to a version that runs properly in El Capitan, or revert to an older version of OS X.
