Rename a photo version: keyboard shortcut

Very simple question:

Is there a way to assign a shortcut to rename a selected picture on Aperture ?I just with it could be as simple as in the Finder, unfortunately there seem no possibility to do so.

Ideally i would like to find a way to avoid using mouse and quickly rename one version after another.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), iTunes 11.1.1 (11)

Do you want to rename the versions or the original files?

You can use "Metadata > Batch Change ⇧⌘B" to rename a batch of selected versions systematically, by using a suitable Metadata preset.

Aperture lets you assign Keyboard shortcuts for all commands, that are accessible from menu items.

Aperture > Commands > Customize

will open the panel to bind key combinations to menu commands.

I do not know any menu entry to rename images, so that will not work.

But see this manual page: Customizing Keyboard Shortcuts

Thanks for your reply. Indeed i want to quickly rename individual images versions without any batch, just quickly passing through all your photos and rename them one after another.

I found a way to do it, it's not a shortcut because as you mentioned, there are no presence of any "Photo / Rename..." menu entry.

Here's my way:

  1. Display photos in Split view or Browser view
  2. Show the Inspector with the Info.
  3. Under the camera infos, select in the dropdown, the metadata view "Name Only" to display only one metadata field: Only the version name should be listed.
  4. Hide map, at the bottom of the Info tab.
  5. Select the photo you want to rename and press the "Tab" key to focus text on the text field "Version name". Rename it your way.
  6. To validate the name, just press the "Tab" key again.
  7. Move to another photo by using arrow keys.

I could not find simpler way and I am so surprised that such feature is not available in such a professional tool. Maybe professionals usually rename their versions before importing ?

That is a great work-around!

Maybe professionals usually rename their versions before importing ?

I rename my versions and add metadata, when I am importing using presets. In the Import panel > Import settings pane is an item "Rename Files". The versions will be renamed to the name of the shoot, the year, and an index. Any information particular to the image goes into the caption. I add that much later, after I have weeded out bad and boring shots and only a few images are remaining. When I do the final edits, I add the captions as well.

Hi. You've made good progress, but your workflow is more complex than it needs to be.

You can easily successively rename Images in any Images view (Browser view, Version view, Split view). Just show on the Metadata tab of the Inspector any Metadata View that includes the field "Version Name". Select in the Images view the first of the series of Images you want to rename, and then click in the "Version Name" field on the Metadata Inspector and rename the Image. Pressing "{Command}+{Right Arrow}" records the change you just made and moves the current Image selection to the next Image. Note that the entire content of the "Version Name" field will be selected, which makes it easy to replace (rather than amend) the Image name.

I believe the reason there is no keyboard shortcut for the single action is because the functionality is built into the UI.

Incidentally, there is a mouse shortcut for "Move Selection Right". It is on the far right of the Control Bar. (Show/Hide the Control Bar when a Viewer pane is present by "Window ▹ Show[Hide] Control Bar", or the keyboard shortcut for that command, which is, by default, "d".)

The interface is rich and deep and, imho, exceptionally well-designed. The materials which explain the UI are good — I recommend memorizing the first eight chapters of the User Manual — but still fall far short of allowing users to find answers to questions such as yours. I hope my answer is useful.

Your next question might be "How can I move step-wise through the Images in a multi-image selection? The answer is to use "{comma}" and "{period}" to move the Primary Selection left/right among the Images selected. This, however, will not allow you to rename successive Images in a multi-Image selection. For that, simply create a new Album from the multi-Image selection, and use the method above with the new Album as the selected container. Of course, you can delete any Album at any time without losing any Images or metadata.

HTH.
