Retina 5K - AMD Boot Camp Driver failure

I would like to begin a discussion of the Boot Camp Drivers for the AMD video card in the stock Retina 5K iMac. There is a thread that demonstrates what appears to be a successful install of the drivers, and a thread that demonstrates a non-successful install.

A non-sucessful install looks like this:

User uploaded file

The drivers tab indicates that driver version 14.200.1002.1002 is installed.

This is the stock Boot camp driver install. The latest beta Catalyst drivers from the AMD website will also return the same results.

I have had conversations with Apple support and it seems there is no official support for Boot Camp after install. They have no useful information beyond blaming Microsoft and/or AMD and acknowledging that there are threads at Apple communities that confirm people are having this issue.

For those of you with the Retina 5K, can you get the AMD Boot Camp drivers to function? If so, what did you do to make it work?

Can you list your specific hardware load out?

I am not concerned about true 5K support in Windows, that is not the issue at this point. The issue is that the AMD Boot Camp drivers will install, but Windows refuses to load them and returns a 'code 43' error.

Update: Same issue as before - error 43. The author of bootcampdrivers.com indicates AMD says it's actually a problem with their driver. I see before that Loner T was trying to get me to install the M390 driver instead of the 290X driver. I'll see what I can do.

The AMD/Apple relationship has been a rocky one since the inception vis-a-vis BC/Windows. If matd2100 says it is an issue, I see a Windows desktop in your very near future.

Not so fast - and I can't believe I'm typing this.

I'm not quite sure how this happened after days of playing with it but according to what I see it is claiming the AMD Radeon R9 M290X (Bootcamp XG edition by bootcampdrivers.com) is functioning.

Driver Provider: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

Driver Date: 1/13/2017

Driver Version: 21.19.411.0

Digital Signer: Bootcampdrivers.com

AMD software installer claims currently installed version is 16.50.2611 is installed.

Recommended driver is 16.12.2 (I'm not about to break what took eons to get working)

Optional driver is 17.1.2 but I also am not about to update that as well.

Now I have to test some things to actually see if it's really working.

Loner, Although this thread includes what appears to be a successful install of the AMD drivers, at no point in the 5 pages of discussion does anyone actually discuss what needs to happen for this result to occur, beyond "...using the built in Bootcamp process. NO snags installing, NO driver/exclamation marks...".

This is was not the case in my install. I used the "built in Bootcamp process" and had different and unsuccessful results.

It is strange to see 8.1 failing. If you do not have a 3TB Fusion drive, you can try an EFI installation of W8.1 (instead of using BCA). You will need to remove the BCA partition via BCA first (do not use Disk Utility). Create a FreeSpace partition within the first 2.2Tb of you internal disk, use the ISO+USB built by BCA and select EFI Boot from the USB and use the FreeSpace as the destination for W8.1.

Novelty I too have ran into the same issue since I picked up my iMac Retina a couple weeks ago. Some people might not find it a biggie to have the most recent drivers installed but I would like to take full advantage of my R9 295X.

I posted the below question in another thread to Y2KPC as he apparently states he "some how" managed to update to the latest drivers on his iMac Retina, however his screen shots of his Device Manager within Windows 8.1 shows Windows is registering his GPU as a R9 200 Series??? Not a R9 290/295X...Of course he hasn't responded to my questions regarding this very query... go figures!

Y2KPC do you mind sharing with us how you managed to install AMD's beta drivers onto your windows 8.1 system? I've tried several times to install both AMD beta drivers as well as the latest update drivers 14.201.1008 for my R9 M295X on my iMac but it still showing my current drivers as 14.200.1002.1002.

I've tried using the boot camp assistant tool to create an updated USB with drivers, I've also tried downloading software from the AMD website and doing a device manager update in windows 8.1 but it fails during installation and I receive an error message after I've selected the "Have Disk" option and located the correct M295X drivers. I also tried using AMD CCC software update and although the installation is successful the new drivers aren't reflected against my GPU.

I also noticed that your CCC is showing your graphics chipset as having a R9 200 series and not a R9 M290/R9 M295X?

I've used the stock boot camp drivers, I've used the latest beta drivers from AMD, I've booted to safemode, removed all the drivers and reinstalled (which results in a error).

I can get the beta drivers to install, but they fail to load with a 'code 43' error. I've disabled driver signing. No effect.

I can usually hack my way through these kinds of errors. This one is kicking my butt.
