Installation Error

I'm trying to install the new iTunes and it doesn't work because of a Quicktime problem. So, I downloaded the Quicktime standalone installer and I get this message.

Error reading from file C:]Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\IXP053.TMP\QuickTime.msi. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

I'm not sure what to do about this. Thank you for your help.

Error reading from file C:]Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\IXP053.TMP\QuickTime.msi. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

let's try this first with that one.

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.

1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).

2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.

3. Open Program Files.

4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.

5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.

6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.

7. Restart your computer.

once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1.3 reinstall.

download and save a copy of the QT 7.1.3 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

Quicktime 7.1.3 Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention itunes

if that install goes through okay, reboot the PC and try another itunes install. does the itunes install work properly this time?

(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

I think I might have a permissions problem, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

that sounds plausible. what administrative privileges do you have in the XP User Account in which you've installed CleanUp? to check, go into your User Accounts control panel and check what it says next to the icon for your User account.

good gracious. okay, although the following document on the 1317 is in the context of installing a different application, the techniques in it describe how to check some specific permissions on folders and in accounts. that seems to be what we're looking for in this context, too:

You may receive an "Error 1317" error message when you try to install Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET

I tried to disable simplified sharing on my folders (it said that might be why I can't see the security tab). But, it says to click on the Advanced settings on my folder options and un-check "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)", but thats not there either. Any other suggestions. I'm sorry this is so difficult. It almost feels like I'm trying to stump you, but I just keep running in to these problems.

no need for you to be sorry.

weird. there seem to be multiple permissions-related things going on here, that don't seem to be associated with the settings you've got in place on the PC.

are you in a corporate environment? if so, are there any "top-down" Windows Security Policies in place on the network?

... okay ...

let's try an experiment.

head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.

now log out of the old account and log into the new account.

can you download and install a copy of CleanUp in that account? (without the 1317 cropping up?)
