Q: Backup new hard drive without losing old files?

My hard drive has had to be replaced and I now have a new one. All of my files have been backed up to a portable hard drive using Time Machine. Since getting my new hard drive, I have created some new documents. Can I use the same portable hard drive to back these up without losing the saved backups from my previous hard drive? please help!
