all, thx for the input. i tried to use an old iPod Touch, but it's 2 Gen. and can only update to iOS 4.2.1 so the newest Apple Remote app, won't load.

You can download an older version of the Remote app. I just tested this on my iPhone 3G, also on iOS 4.2.1. For instructions, see: App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps. In particular, click on the link for the "workaround" in that article.

lost apple tv remote ...

Some newer third party "universal" remotes have a pre-programmed setting for controlling Apple TVs. If you have a universal remote, check its manual or search for it online & see if there is a program code for "Apple" anywhere in its listings. Often, this will be in the "Audio" or "Multimedia" section of the listings. Some TV remotes & many cable box remotes also have a pre-programmed setting for Apple, so check for that too.

For example, I have a 55" Vizio TV with a "smart" remote that can be programmed to control the ATV & an Atlas/UEI brand cable box remote that can do this as well.

all, thx for the input. i tried to use an old iPod Touch, but it's 2 Gen. and can only update to iOS 4.2.1 so the newest Apple Remote app, won't load. will try some other solutions, but yeah this MacBook is from 2008 and is showing it's age. may have to replace soon 😟. i did get to play a podcast over AirPlay on the iPod Touch and have played music and other audio contact through my shared speakers using Apple TV but still yet to figure out how to navigate the menu and content. stuck using mini Display port to use my TV's screen...

Apple TV will learn the buttons on any remote control you may have around the house. However, you do need to be able to control the apple tv with something in order to get to that point. I use the program 1Keyboard from the app store on my macbook. It controls the apple tv via bluetooth. If you can get it to pair with your Apple TV from the MacBook end, without having to go to the bluetooth menu on Apple TV, then "you're in business". Else, you will need to use an iPhone/iPod app (Remote) or borrow an Apple TV remote. There are so many Apple TV's out there, I'm sure a good neighbor can lend you a remote for a few minutes. Hope this helps.

this sounds like a useful tool for me however not something i'd spend $9.99 on. thanks for the suggestion would love to try, but that's basically half the price of a new remote.. i'd just buy another remote. also, fyi to those running Remote app on iPod Touch 2nd Gen. iOS 4.2.1 i've had multiple problems with this app now. i reset the iPod and reinstalled the app but it still exists out of the app while in use only after one command or two, so i have to keep reopening the app and try to navigate the Apple TV menu one gesture at a time, very frustrating, but at least i can somewhat control my Apple TV for now, basically no additional cost with what i already have. looking for new solutions still, but frugal. thanks all for the input.
