How can I tell if a fax was successfully sent?

Can someone tell me how I can tell if a fax was successfully sent?
I'm using the built-in software. I used the print function of a .pdf file,
and selected 'fax pdf'. The icon at the top showed 'connecting' and
then 'sending', but I never saw 'sent'.

I am not kidding. The best way I know of to determine if a fax is successfully sent is to ask the recipient about it.

Open the Fax setup in Print/Fax prefs and select the completed tab.

Ask for a receipt confirmation from the recipient.
