i called the apple store. you have to click on the "service request and troubleshooting" icon to get the genius bar option. *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
steps:
1. http://www.apple.com/retail/
2. click on "get help now." (tiny blue font)
3. click on your product (mine being MAC then MAC NOTEBOOK) **i don't know if this works for software/apps but it will work for computers, ipads, iphones...
4. click on "service requests and troubleshooting"
5. click on "topic is not listed"
6. fill in the problem you're having in the "describe your issue" box and click "continue."
7. apple will offer to help you online. click "no thank you."
8. then click on "visit genius bar."
huge amount of effort. apple: bring back the old school way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also: apple.com/retail/YOUR STORE NAME works as an access point to step 1-8 above. completely ridiculous.
…call a store. Go to applecare. get a human. tell him to make an appointment. it is stupid. but it works. I t took me a week of frustration, 29.00 AND 3 trips to the Biltmore Store to figger this out. It's Apple's answer to windows VISTA! now, about Mail...
…hmmm-mm. I do not have one o' them smart *** phones. I get the human, he makes my appointment.
I found Frank Caggiano's suggestion of Nov 17, 2014 10:12 AM to be quickest [Get the Apple Store App and select "stores", then navigate to your store, scroll to bottom to make GB appt].
Works well, no shenanigans and questions about what your hassle is, no forcing you to chat, call, or etc.
I suppose I can't blame Apple—they must be getting inundated with GB appts. Geniuses cost money . . . though Apple does have plenty of that!
Thanks, Frank!

This works! Thank you so much! 🙂
If you don't have the Apple store app, click through the various options until you can chat with a support person. Once you are in a chat just tell the person you want to make a genius bar appointment and which location. at least this way they will have your actual issue listed rather than a fake hardware issue that you used to get the genius bar option to display.
Call Applecare. Get Human. Ask Human to make appt'. Show up at appointment.Put Mac on Craigslist. Buy a PC.
Go to youtube. Look up BANNED APPLE ADS. laugh at apple.
This worked like a charm! Thanks so much for posting! 🙂
This worked for me. I was pulling my hair out trying to make a Genius Bar appointment. Apple has always been about systems and devices that are intuitive. Unbelievable that they make this so difficult now. Thanks for your help. My appointment is now set.
Got my appointment thru the App on my iPhone and all is well. 🙂
Thanks!! What a relief!
This worked when other pathways did not. It might be that the text of our explanations are being read and your options limited by the terms used. I put that I was having a reoccurrence of a problem addressed before (true) and only then did the magic "No thanks" appear and open the portal to choosing the Genius Bar. Before I was just describing the problem. By getting your serial number up front it also allows them to push you to paying for help via chat or phone where the Bar is free. All in all it is a pretty stupid thing to make one of your hallmark strengths impossible to access.
Very good explanation of the details. I always advise this way - "After getting started by picking your device, Answer each Question with as close to 'Other' as possible." - I haven't heard that this was unsuccessful yet. 😎
