.AAE files downloaded from iPhone 6

i have a very weird issue where i just imported about 500 photos from my iPhone 6 and it prompted me for a place to put unsupported files. i selected the desktop and i now have a boatload of "IMG_20XX.AAE" files on my desktop.

this is really odd since yesterday i was cleaning up old folders and found a folder with two photos in it and 2000 AEE file which i believe came over from my PC about five years ago.

i did a forum search and a google search and most of the links seem to say something about windows and an earlier post on another forum indicated these were sidecar files and not images (??). i am running XP and windows 7 in boot camp mode but i don't see how this could affect my import from my phone to aperture.

anyone got any good info on this?

THANKS

In iOS8 (with iCloud Photo Library Beta) any edits you do in Photos.app will be stored as sidecar files "IMG_20XX.AAE". These are the edited versions of your photos. Unfortunately, there is not yet an app on the Mac, that can read these files and apply the edits to the originals.

These files will be imported to your Mac nevertheless. I expect, the new Photos.app for Yosemite, to be released next year, will be able to read these files and apply the edits.

ak. so i guess i am running iCloud Photo Library Beta by default or by accident somehow?

Check the "Settings" on your mobile devices. iCloud Photo Library Beta will be enabled in

Setting > iCloud > Photos > iCloud Photo Library (Beta)

i mean, i definitely didn't do edits on this many photos on my iphone and maybe only tweaked three or four at most...

Perhaps you have an effect enabled in your Camera.app?

After a bit of pondering I realized that these (the AAE-files) represented photos that I had been editing in the phone with those new (and rather splendid) tools that are now part of the 'Photos' app. I had been wondering what would happen to the original photos, as keeping both no longer seemed to be an option. No, there doesn't seem to be any apps that can edit the AAE-files on the Mac as yet. But what I did was transferring the edited photos from iPhone using 'AirDrop'. That worked like a charm, and I now have both the original and the edited photos on my mac.
