Q: playing songs thru apple TV

Until recently, I have been able to remote or stream the songs on my iphone through my apple TV and listen to them thru my TV speakers.   There was an access panel at the bottom of the screen in iphone "music" that you pulled up like a sunshade, and inside was an option to choose either the iphone speaker or the apple TV.  I have an iphone 5 running IOS 8.1.  It appears the sunshade screen is gone and I cannot locate any settings allowing an interface between the iphone and an apple TV.  Is there still a way to do this?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.3

    Hello there, rich3500.

The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great information in regard to using AirPlay Mirroring and your iOS device:

Thank you, this article is helpful, and I never would have thought to look in the home screen menu.  However, I am not so interested in displaying my iphone onto my TV.  I am trying to play my iphone songs through the apple TV and the sound system that is hooked to it.  When I follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base article above, I can mirror my iphone display, but it still doesn't play songs in my Music app.  Is there another article that might describe that, or has Apple eliminated that capability?

If the music player doesn't support AirPlay, you will need to use AirPlay mirroring basically forcing the app to broadcast it's sound. It's up to the app developer if they want to support airplay.

I think my question was unclear.  I am using the "Music" app that comes built into all iphones, it comes from Apple not a third-party developer.  This is one of the icons that sits at the bottom of the home screen and cannot be relocated.  I want the iphone to stream songs to the Apple TV, so I can listen to them through the TV's speakers.  That was easy before I upgraded to IOS 8.  Is that no longer possible?

    Hello again, rich3500.

Thanks for the update on the nature of your issue. The referenced article provided the steps on how to play content on your Apple TV through your iOS device:

iOS: Use AirPlay Mirroring - Apple Support

To enable AirPlay Mirroring on your iOS 7 device, follow these steps:

    1. Connect your iOS device and your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
    2. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to access Control Center.
    3. Tap AirPlay. See what to do if you can't see the AirPlay icon.
    4. Tap the name of the Apple TV you wish to AirPlay to, then tap Mirroring. Once enabled, your iOS device's screen will be mirrored on your Apple TV.

In your case you don't have to tap the Mirroring button, but in this way you are selecting your Apple TV to play your content on.

You can also find some recommendations for improving performance issues with Airplay in this article:

Resolve issues with AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring from iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Resolve performance issues with AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring

If you are experiencing intermittent playback or significant network lag with AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring, it could be due to a weak Wi-Fi connection, interference, or the distance between the Wi-Fi router and your iOS device, Apple TV or AirPort Express.

    Try these suggestions:

    • Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
    • Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
    • Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
    • If possible, try to locate your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your iOS device and Apple TV.
    • If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
    • If the Wi-Fi router has an external antenna, check to see that is it connected properly and in good condition.
    • Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.
