time capsule and Panasonic smart tv connection not working

I have just had the NBN installed (Australias new Fibre Network) and I am using the Time Capsule as the router. The TC is connected by ethernet to the NBN Port and my iMac is connected to the time capsule by ethernet. All other devices (iPads, iPhone and Mac book pro connect wirelessly to the Time Capsule and I am enjoying terrific speeds. My new TV arrived today and it is a Panasonic 60" Smart TV. I have been trying to connect this to my home network and run in to problems. The TV connects to the Time Capsule but it will not connect to the internet. Panasonic recommend using the auto settings and the set up shows my TV connected to the router nut the router not connected to the net? I know this is not true as I can access the net on my laptop.

The TV says it is "connected to the home network but cannot find the IP address"

I phoned Panasonic and they were less than useless - if it doesn't wotk on Auto mode then no idea - call your isp!

I phoned my ISP and they are trying to help - iinet are very very good - but as yet we are getting nowhere. They really don't know much about Time Capsules!

Anybody had a similar experience or can offer any thoughts it would be great!

Tell me what the IP and gateway and dns that the TV gets and how they match what the other devices are getting.

Problems with TV are common.. you are an apple household and this is common situation.. the apple stuff all works happily but the rest of the world.. your game consoles, PC, TV etc are not invited to the party. On issue is Apple has moved to using IPv6 in a major way.. it is not necessary but it is helping the setup of the other apple clients.. the TV is missing out.

There are a couple of ways around the problem.

Set it up manually.. so you tell the TV to use 8.8.8.8 as dns .. things will often suddenly start working.

You can add a simple cheap wireless router (working as WAP) for the TV and other non-apple world devices.. that can also work great.. is cheap and simple.

A $35 N lite TP-Link router from your nearest MSY will do fine.

Or use ethernet.. does the TV have ethernet.. if so use it instead of wireless.. buy a set of EOP adapters as it works hugely better than wireless for lots of people.

To pursue this further what TC do you own.. model and firmware please.

Are you using apple type names.. don't. Fix the names to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Use only alphanumeric passwords.

A few screenshots.. always helps.

My email is on my website.. I am on the other side of Melbourne. But happily to help.

Hi Lapastenague

I managed to work out the issues and it is now working beautifully.

Used airport utility to change the following settings on the Time Capsule

Wireless Tab, Changed WPA2 to WPA3/WPA

Network Tab, changed "off (bridged mode)" to DHCP and NAT

Then tried the TV again using auto connect and bingo!

My Time Capsule is the older square version 2tb 2012 model

That is plugged in to the NBN Box by ethernet, then my main iMac is plugged into the TC.

Speed tests are very good, but a bit up and down. I am on 100/40 and earlier today I got 96/38.

I was going to go out and purchase a new router, but it looks like the Time Capsule is doing a fine job and yes I am an apple addict!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts!

I hope this helps anyone else out there who was as frustrated as I was earlier today. Even cracked a bottle of Sparkling to celebrate!!!!

You should always have been using dhcp and nat.. the fibre connection does not have that many IP addresses but you might be getting away with IPv6.. as I said it won't work on IPv4. That has to be done by NAT router.

I am also not sure WPA3 is available as yet.. but it does show the TV is well out of date.. wpa2 is now many years in the market place.. try going back to wpa2 personal and see if it still works.

Gen4 TC is plenty powerful enough to route 100/40..

But I am truly envious.. our area has NBN slated, and the phone lines are decaying at a great rate. Whenever it rains, like last weekend it all goes on the blink for a week.. and I am down to 5.5Mbps from 6.5Mbps.. shrug.. with the Philistines in charge who think 56K analogue modems are fast broadband .. I doubt the situation will get better for most of us.

As long as you crack it after the job .. that is fine.. I see lots of people think it will help during the job.. but it tends to make their brains which already were a bit fuzzy less than coherent.

WPA2 is what I meant to say - it was a long and painful day!!!!! Interesting that the TV is a 2014 model. It has a great picture compared to our very old sony.

When they say SMART TV they are really kidding themselves I think. I know a little about networking and IT, but it was a real pain to sort out.

Streamed a movie last night from quickflix and didn't miss a beat, and surfed the web at the same time.

Cheers for your help!
