iPhone will not sync to iTunes (12)

Hi,

So here is my experience from yesterday.

Yesterday evening I installed the latest Osx update 10.10.1 upon my Macbook Pro.

I then decided to install iOS 8.1.1 on my iPad2. As there have been some issues on over the air installations I opted to use iTunes. I had already performed a full erase and restore on the iPad due to performance issues so did not want a repeat. The iPad synced, performed a backup and then updated without issue.

I then moved to my iPhone 5.

Connected the lightning cable, iTunes and iPhoto both open and sync.

I back up via iTunes without issue and then select the update option and iTunes begins to download the update. After a few minutes the screen on the Mac goes into powersave, I hit the trackpad to wake it again whereupon I find iTunes still downloading the update and message appears prompting me to enter my passcode on the iPhone to continue with installation. My fat fingers missed and I hit the wrong number, I corrected and the iPhone unlocked BUT was now not synced to the Mac.

Things I tried.

1st. Full reset (hold home and power) for iPhone and a restart on the Mac. Reconnect, iPhone charges but no applications pick up the device. By that I mean iTunes and iPhoto.

2nd. Full erase and reset to factory settings on the iPhone and restore from previous day backup, select restore from iTunes back up, prompted to connect to iTunes but does not connect device, although it still charges. Restore iPhone from iCloud over Wi-Fi. iPhoto does not respond to the connected iPhone either.

3rd. Install iOS 8.1.1 over Wi-Fi. Restart Mac. Attempt to connect to iTunes, still no device and iPhoto not responding to the connected iPhone, iPhone still charges.

4th. Change lightning cable, results same, no response, iPhone charges.

5th. Check iTunes account, iPhone still listed as a paired device, delete stored back up, try to connect, same as above.

6th. Another restart of both Mac and iPhone, also attempt the force close technique mentioned in another thread within the Activity Monitor. Locate the usbmuxd process and close. Try to reconnect and still no response as per above.

7th. Try force close again just in case. No response.

8th. This morning I re tried the iPad2 which again synced without drama (and is working much faster after the update). iPhone still no go.

9th. Gave up and went to work.

So, keeping in mind my technical abilities (limited) any advice will be received and appreciated!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES â–¹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Update.

So the wife just brought me her iPod Nano for me to add some podcasts, and it appears that my Mac is not picking this up either! So now I'm thinking it's not my phone or iOS that has an issue, it must be an issue with iTunes, my Mac or the cable.

The iPad still syncs.

The iPhone does not.

The iPod does not.

Both charge.

I have 2 cables and both are pretty old so I am going to buy a new genuine apple lightning cable this week and try that. Lets see, the iPad2 of course uses it's own cable so I'm pinning my hopes on it being that simple.

Fixed it!!! But its broken again 😠

My new cable is yet to arrive but my impatiants got the better of me so I was searching more topics in the forums with similar issues to my own and happened to come across a solution where someone used the "reset network settings" on their iPhone to solve a charging issue. I thought it can't hurt right?

I proceed with the reset network settings a reconnect the iPhone to my Mac.

Wait, whats this? iPhoto springs into life, could it be? I have to open iTunes manually but yes!! There is my iPhone, finally synced. I set it back to wifi sync and eject.

Now the iPod, boom! it syncs..All good, make some changes and eject..MISTAKE..now it's gone, back to charge but no sync.

The iPhone shows still in sync over wifi, I eject. MISTAKE.

So I'm back to where I was, both devices will not sync and I can not replicate the reset to reaqquaint the devices.

So, by a process of elimination it appears to be some kind of network/software error, probably Yosomite related but I'm out of ideas other than going through the whole reset process agian for which I have no appetite as 1st and foremost I shouldn't have to! It should (and I quote) JUST WORK.

What now clever people?

OK

I appear to have fixed my issue. I reset my network settings again and was able to get my Mac to finally pick up the phone and iPod again, but this time iTunes finally put up a "trust this computer" message again and once accepted it appears to have sorted the issue.

Using the console as per the advice given above I noticed that after the reset it started logging messages, mostly errors between the phone and mac, there seemed to be some kind of mismatch, the mac was asking for permission when connecting via usb but being blocked. Finally getting iTunes to prompt me to trust my mac again cleared it. I still have no idea how it got into this situation or why it killed my iPod from syncing too but it's fixed.

So, if your iPhone will not sync to your mac but charges, and other devices using lightning cable fail too, at least try to reset your network on your phone as amongst other things I tried this seemed to work, the key seems to be getting the trust message to kick in.
