Q: iTunes Asks For My Password Every Time It Opens

Running Mac OSX 10.10.1 (Yosemite) and iTunes 12.0.1.26

Every time I open iTunes, it asks me for my password. It asks for it usually four times:

-to enable automatic downloads (twice, not always in succession)

- to enable iTunes Radio

- And to enable downloads

I've asked this before with no success and no solutions.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

I am agreeing with McQ.  This has not happened in the past.  I too make a habit of clearing cookies, caches, history and never had this issue until recently.   I am certain it has to do with some recent update be it iTunes, the OS, or Safari.  Something has changed to cause this behavior.

Itunes 12 or one of the 11's

I noticed after one of the 11 updates - gee for everyone including Snow Leopard people --  that, if I opened Itunes while in this site - when I closed Itunes I was signed out of this site while the webpage still said I was logged in but couldn't log out = blah blah   - think I put it in as a bug so it may have been corrected to keep the log-ins separate.

One thought is Apple may not have enough servers for Itunes, cloud etc - so they are timing out your sign-in -- if you don't have any activity after a certain length of time.      Old IT trick to free up resources for active users - by bumping off the ones who have not had any activity within a certain length of time.

All with issues may want to report it as a bug to get apples attention.

Off line I reviewed all the preference setups for the last 11.xx update to itunes again - and, if you have not, looked at the latest version - you want to go through them for sharing, devices, and on one page - un tick do you want to share with apple.

Most of the time after an update to itunes I open it to make sure it still works and close it and don't open it up again.  Had those great little clear usb speakers that hooked up to my monitor - with change-over  from os9 to os10 apple dropped support on them - on update to mac pro - the tiny little speakers doesn't to song justice anyway.     Still using the monitor the speakers came with --

Anyway - did notice it with Safari updates that Apple was always changing my setup - so it pays to go through your setup every  time you get an update

Thanks for the additional message, notcloudy. In the settings you mentioned, my checkbox for "Share With Apple" is already unchecked. I make sure it's never checked.

So, we're narrowing down the list of possible causes, but still trying to find out the one that is the real problem. I'm going to try again tomorrow with Apple Technical Support on the phone, but the last time I called, they weren't able to help.

I did see in passing articles where Microsoft & probably Apple changed security so you could not use a single sign-on to sign on-to multiple servers/networks  at the same time .

Ask if this is a change in security - that if you don't allow automatic connection - you must enter passwords for each server.

This problem, which lasted several months, is no longer a problem for me. About 5 days ago I was preparing to test a few additional scenarios from this thread and another (Re: Re: Re: iTunes: multiple "sign in" required on launch) and I opened iTunes and was only prompted to sign in once when I attempted to make an iTunes purchase. No other sign in prompts were required.

Perhaps this was a problem with Apple's server settings (some admin issue on their end)? Who knows...

So, I'm considering this problem closed, for me since I have not been prompted again.

I'd be curious to learn if others continue to have this problem or if they also have found it to be resolved.

It is still as problem for me.  As recently as last night I was prompted five times after opening iTunes.  Still a pain.

Wayne, that would be really nice if it's solved for you. I hope it is. So far, it's still happening to me. Looks like Jassy is still experiencing it too. I've still not gotten around to calling back to the phone support about it. Always too busy. If it was a show stopper, I'd probably make the priority and call. For now I'll live with it until I get an hour or two to devote to that call.

    Thanks for the follow up.

I'm the same, it's recently started and asks for my password every time iTunes opens.

This seems to work.  iTunes has not asked me to sign in yet and I have opened it four times.   Try this, a suggestion I got from WetShaver.

Go to iTunes > Preferences  >  Advanced  > Reset all dialog warnings:  "Reset Warnings"    I also "Reset Cache"

Thanks, Jassy. I just tried that, and it seemed ok, until I cleared my Safari browser cache and history. That is what seems to trigger the extra log in requests for me.

However, this time, it only had me log in twice, which is better than four times! So maybe this did help?

Thanks for passing that along. Every little bit of information helps!

    Just a quick follow up:

I still don't need to sign in multiple times so I'm still good.

In the other thread I just responded to (same issue, see link somewhere above) I did make a song purchase from iTunes using credit from a previously redeemed gift card. Other than that, nothing on my end changed and I only have to sign in when making a purchase.

Have any of you made a purchase while experiencing this problem?

I am still of a mind to think that there may be some "certificate" issue with the Apple servers where, in a perfect world, the first server accessed would authenticate my access and any other servers would accept the certificate from the first server. In the problematic world each server accessed required separate authentication.

I'll take some screen shots of my preferences and add them soon. Perhaps that info may help?

That's great news about not needing the multiple sign ins, Wayne. Hoping it's settled here too, but not confident.

As for the other issue, I've not experienced it.

The solution I shared yesterday is not failing me today.  After no requests to sign in after I posted WetShaver's solution, just now, iTunes asked me three times to sign in.   Guessing that was not the solution.  Bummer
