I recently bought an ibook g4 with osx 10.5.8   I would like to downgrade to 10.3.9.  I spoke to 2 people at the genious bar. One said to buy osx 10.3 9 on amazon. another said that might not work as the upgrade to 10.5 could have made internal changes.

I have another ibook g4 with 10.3.9 on it. Is there any way to utilie this?

Thanks

It depends on what iBook model it is; a Mac can’t run a Mac OS X version older than the one it originally shipped with. If needed, click here and find the model in the list.

    Thanks Niel.

Bear with me, as I'm not particularly computer literate.

I found the computer listed (Powerbook 6,7, 12 inch screen) and the following note:

"Details: *This model is capable of using Mac OS 9 applications within the Mac OS X "Classic" environment provided with Mac OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and lower ("Classic" is not supported starting with Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"). It cannot boot into Mac OS 9."

Does this mean if I purchase OSX 10.4.11,  I can install it and then use software that works in the "Classic" environment?

    Again thanks for your help.

You’ll need to find the computer’s original disks or a retail 10.4.3 or 10.4.6 package to do that, and install it onto a blank partition or drive. Another Mac’s original ones won’t work.

Ok, great. I found OSX 10.4 on Amazon (open box). I'll try it and let you know how it turns out.

When you said  " install it onto a blank partition or drive", I was wondering if that meant that if I had a problem loading it, I could put on a remote hard drive and somehow start the ibook with it?

It means that you can’t put it onto a volume which currently has Mac OS X 10.5 installed. If desired, use the Disk Utility in 10.5 to create a new partition on the internal drive; this way, you can have both installed at once.
