My Mac suddenly started running really slow.

Hi, Lex. I've been having the same problem as everyone else you've been helping. Would you mind looking my Etrecheck report over as well? Thank you so much!

Goedendag Patty,

-- This is the first time I see HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS31N "partitions" (24 in total) that are not formatted and keep ATA drivers. These are Windows drivers !!!

Since they are not mounted it is probably not the cause of your "sudden slowness".

-- Then there is a second thing: the TimeMachine reading is not correct, maybe because of all of these above menntioned "partitions", I don't know, but it may be that TM is not working correctly.

-- The third other thing is that you have to update Flashplayer, but that also is not the cause of your issue.

Q1: I really don't see anything from the list that may be the cause: is all hardware (disk, ram) original, or has it been changed?

Q2: Did you ever install these ATA drivers? Did they come perhaps with the WDC disk (when that has been changed at all) and software that came with the WDC disk? Ik hoop dat je me kunt volgen.

Q3: are you familiar with the Terminal app, with that we can remove these disk anomalies.

Hi Lex,

I don't understand all of the terms you use, and couldn't find clear definitions online, so the best I can say is that since I don't know what ATA drivers are, it's probably a safe bet that I didn't install them on purpose. Some of the files do come from a Time Machine backup of my last Windows computer, but just documents, pictures, and music. I don't know if that could perhaps be the cause?

Q1: The hard drive is not the original. In August, my computer crashed and I got a new hard drive. In September, I had to take it in for this sudden slowness problem. This time (November) it is happening again, but not as bad. I wanted to catch it before it got un-usable. If this is something I'm causing by my care of the computer, I would love to know so it can stop! I shut it off every night and delete files regularly.

Q2: (already answered)

Q3: I've heard of it. It uses computer language, correct? As long as you can guide me in what to enter, I'd be happy to give it a try.

You mentioned that Time Machine is not working correctly - what do you mean? I am able to back up successfully onto it, or at least I thought so.

Thanks again!

Sorry for the slow reply.

Hi Patty,

I propose to do following:

disconnect the external drives

download the trial version of DriveDx from http://binaryfruit.com

Then install it, it sits in the menu bar after install, click and you get the menu, click "check drive health",

then "save drive health report", it asks where to save it, remember, then open the Health Report, copy the text completely and post it here.

You can read the Report yourself (it includes a lot of explanation) by clicking the DriveDx in the menubar, and choosing "Open DriveDx Application". Read it.

(you can also download DriveDx from the Appstore but that is a paid version, actually the same).

That is good: your drive is in perfect health: no pre-fail indications.

Not asked for remark: never upgrade the OS when you have issues on the actual one, these have to be solved first.

Would you consider a "fresh" install of Mavericks? This will take some time but will solve the "funny" small partitions at the same time.

Basically you do as follows:

make backups of all your user data on an external disk.

from the restore partition you format the startup disk

then you restore the OS

then you install a few apps (freshly downloaded from trusted sources), test the system, if OK bring over the user data.

then another few apps, and so on.

do not install google apps.

do not install any "tools", optimisers, boosters and what have you, nor "smart" software from WesternDigital, nor any other disk optimising software.

do not install Torrent apps, nor keygenerators and what have you.

My question asked.

I think this will be much better than just remove the weird partitions.
