Q: Aperture not responding!

It has happened again and again.  Seems to happen randomly - if I've asked Aperture to do too much, after several edits or completely randomly.  Then after force quitting and restarting the program, it locks up again and again is not responding.  Takes a good 4-6 tries to get it to open again.  Help, any one else experiencing this.  Oh, and I've repaired the library several times.

What specifically do you mean by "not responding"?  (The Activity Monitor is notoriously unhelpful.)  What happens if you just wait?

How much RAM?  4 GB may not be enough to run Aperture and a current OS.

How much free space on your system drive?  You should leave _at least_ 10% of the drive empty.  I recommend 20% for Aperture users.

Have you updated all software to the current versions for your OS?  Apple and others are continually fixing bugs and improving performance.

Have you checked your drive for permissions problems or possible early signs of failure?  Use OS X's Disk Utility.

Are you having issues with any other programs?

Are you running any uncommon programs or using any uncommon hardware (including tablets, pens, etc.)?

Have you done any of the other steps listed on Apple's Aperture trouble-shooting page?

Programs that hang/crash/don't-let-you-work are frustrating, but most issues can be resolved.  Aperture is a resource-intensive application, but when properly maintained will work well.

    Hi Kirby,

Thanks so much for all of this information.  I recently moved this Aperture library to an external drive (1TB in size) to free up more space on the iMac. There is 419 GB available on the external drive.

I haven't updated to the newest operating system.  I'm waiting until year end there is another program that I'm phasing out, that isn't compatible with Yosemite.  I need that program (Parallels) to work until year end for bookkeeping purposes.

I commonly use the Command-Option-Escape to see what's happening with applications.  If the application isn't responding, I usually Force Quit.  I'm not having issues with other programs, except occasionally Safari.

I just ran Disk Utility and it said that the Aperture Library needed to be repaired.  "Invalid record count."  Upon repairing, it said that it "could not be verified completely" and "Invalid Node Structure."  Followed by, "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk.  Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files."

Unfortunately, I don't understand how to do this.  I'd appreciate any help you can give!

One more thing.  I do have a Time Machine backup from yesterday, so I'm thinking that is a safe backup of my Aperture Library.  I just have no idea what it means to "reformat disk."

Great!  Thanks, Allan.  I've now followed those steps, ending with Erasing the data on the hard drive.  Now could you help me with the restoring part?  Using my backup and getting that Aperture library back on the hard drive.

    Many thanks!

I've figured out how to enter Time Machine, found the last backup and hit "Restore."  Hopefully this will help!  Also, my husband says that he had already formatted the hard drive for Mac.

Well, I've tried restoring my library, which I deleted off of the external hard drive, twice now.  I was asked to rebuild the library to fix inconsistencies and when I opened it up, most of the files were completely corrupt!!!

So, I've deleted it again and have gone back into Time Machine to try again.  Ugh, I'm feeling quite ill right now about all of this!

I'm not having success.  Does anyone know if there is someone I can call for help?
