Troubleshoot to find the problem that must be fixed. I suggest this order, testing after each, until you get things working:
(0) If you have never successfully used FaceTime, start with FaceTime for Mac: Troubleshooting FaceTime.
(1) Shut down EVERYTHING. Then restart modem, router, wireless, Mac in order.
Allow each device to complete self test before starting the next. Then testing FT again.
(2) With NO OTHER Firewire devices connected, test your old external iSight & connection to make sure it is functional.
(3) Quit FT. Then throw away the com.apple.FaceTime.plist file that is insider your User/Library/Preferences folder.
Restart Mac & test FT again.
(4) Reinstall OS X. Then test again.
