Can I use the 10.6. install disk that came with my 2010 MBP to install 10.6.8 on my wife's older MB (intel i5 w/10.5)?

A:

OEM system installers are meant only to be used on the computers they came with, but you can certainly try as long as you don't have Snow Leopard installed on the newer model.

No. Disk that come with Macs are hardware specific to that Mac.

No the install disks that come with a Mac are machine-specific and will only work with the exact same model Mac.

So. If I go to the App store, they offer a Snow Leopard disk for $19.95. Is this the proper way to upgrade my wife's MB to 10.6.8?

Yes that is the starting point. The retail disk is 10.6.3, install and then Software Update to 10.6.8.

Thanks. So I'm sure I understand, the disks that come packaged with the machines are made specific to that machine, but the disk offered through the Apple APP Store is not tied to any specific machine?
