iPod Nano V. 1.3 not appearing in iTunes

Okay, so I've recently broke my iPod, and desperately needed a way to listen to music. So, I found my old iPod Nano and tried to load it up with songs, but it did not appear in my iTunes library or anywhere. I'm currently using Mavericks on the newest version of iTunes. Any ideas?
