I can't Format or erase my flash drive

Hello,

My problem:

An 8 gig flash drive i have is in read only status, so i go to disc utility and there are no options to restore the thumb drive it original format, permission friendly format. the erase option is grayed out ....hmmm, what can i do? thank you in advance

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

If there’s a physical switch on the drive which controls write access, check that. Otherwise, this suggests that the drive’s about to fail.
