Contacts sync and backup on iPhone

I am on iphone 4s running ios 8.1.1. It seems the contacts on my phone are associated with my windows live account. Anything i create new on my iphone gets created on my live id, which is great. Now the real part is how do i get these contacts copied to my icloud? I am planning to suspend my live id for the time being. I did goto settings / icloud / and turned on "contacts". But when i access icloud online, my contacts are empty! How do i sync the existing contacts from my iphone to icloud?

iPhone 4S, iOS 8, iPhone ios 8.0.2

Temporarily turn off iCloud contacts, and then turn off your Windows Live contacts (turn off, or delete account). You should be prompted to keep the existing contacts on the iPhone, select "yes". Now turn iCloud contacts on and that may then start uploading the contacts (which at this point only exist on the iPhone). Be sure to give it time for your contacts to upload to iCloud, it may take several minutes, maybe up to an hour.

I have tried this method but it doesn't show "Keep on my iPhone"

It does ask whether to keep or delete while trying to turn off icloud contacts.

Bummer. Well, another way might be to export your Live contacts (using a computer) to a vCard file and import that to iCloud.com from the computer. There may also be apps for your iPhone that will handle contact exporting. Look for one that supports vCard since that is the format iCloud can import.

All good now. Exported live contacts as CSV and converted to VCF. Uploaded to icloud! Phew.. 😁
