Mail exchange Inbox crashed

For the second time since upgrading to OS8, now on OS8.1.1, my exchange inbox has lost all mail except maybe 25 messages.

Now it Has to rebuild mail all way back to 2013.

what is causing this.

iPhone 5s, iOS 8
