Q: itunes is currently unavailable

My Apple TV 3 has been playing up for a few days, possibly since the latest update - not sure.

Basically, i can no longer play any purchased TV/movies or iTunes Match music via the Apple TV (still fine via my other Apple devices - Mac, iPad 2, iPhone 4S) and the following message appears, accompanied with a black screen and yellow triangle "iTunes is currently unavailable. Try again later."

I've searched the forms boards and found a bunch of possible solutions that haven't worked: reset and/or restart Apple TV, Sign out and back in to iTunes on both the Apple TV and my Mac, switched Dolby Digital from Auto, On and Off - nothing has worked.

Could this be an Apple server authentication issue? On purchased movies and TV, it's at the authentication stage that things seem to stop.

Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated. Right now, iTunes Match and Apple TV aren't doing the job I paid for.

Well, after 7 days it seems that they finally just fixed it. I have been trying everything for hours straight and then things started working fine right now. Great !

I have been diagnosing the same problem all day today in Texas, reading the great community posts; then I saw at the end - everything just started working...so I went to the TV, tried it...and alas...it just started working.  At least I have rebooted everything now. Thanks folks.  Apple never responded to my email asking for help...

Sweden here. It still does not work. It's been out of order for 48 hours. This is below your standard Apple. I've got 31 movies that I have bought for a lot of money that I can't enjoy watching with my Apple TV. To be frank, it s ucks.

Here in Tennessee nothing works for me yet. I even restarted/reset everything again.

bought a movie that wasn't rentable yet, for the whole family to watch on Thanksgiving, and ended up paying for it, working for an hour trying to get it to work, NOT seeing it, and finally going to the theatre to actually watch something.

Long ago, I felt like Comcast didn't fully understand that a digital black out was similar to an electric black out, since we depend so much on the internet. We make all of our plans around having a service. When it doesn't work, it's a pretty big deal. Black outs happen, and a movie is not like the entire internet, but a week without music or video? Over the entire holiday? That's pretty bad service. I am surprised that Apple thinks this is ok to do without any explanations.

I tried Churchill's hard restart sequence.  But my generation 2 Apple TV won't let me Restore it.  I get to the step where it asks me to sign into a network and it won't let me join my wireless network. I get an error message. My wireless network is fine, all other devices in my home work fine.  I did an internet speed test that checked out fine. Prior to my Reset/Restore gambit I at least had Netflix and HBO Go. Now I can't get connected at all. Any ideas?

I downloaded the movie to my iPad and I was able to play it just fine from there. It is obviously authentication issues with Apple TV servers. I contacted Apple Support and told them what was happening and apparently they fixed the problem on my side of the world. I suggest you do the same.

    andrewfromnewyork,

If you reset your Apple TV, you erased all of your authentications associated with your 3rd party apps like Netflix and HBO Go. If this is the case, then you most likely need to supply your username and password (don't forget your Wi-Fi as well if it's not wired). If you just rebooted your Apple TV, it should work just fine. If none of this works, can you give more details about the problem that you observed?

Still down in Utah.   I still believe the issue is tied to users who have mac.com and me.com address fields in their apple ID's.  Apple TV uses the older field even when you type the iCloud.com email address, and this might be causing inconstancies in the authorization process since some web services use username@icloud.com and some use the legacy addresses such as username@mac.com.

I tried using my daughters Apple ID which was created recently using only the iCloud.com schema (we are using family sharing) and it works fine.  I think it is just an issue for legacy users and the way that Apple TV reassigns your Apple ID from the newer variety to the older kind.

Connect to iTunes via USB and restore to factory settings.

Yikes!  Whatever you did corrupted your Apple TV. You will need to restore your Apple TV by plugging the USB to your computer and open iTunes app. The good news is you didn't killed it. Not yet.

That's interesting. I'm still using legacy account and my iTunes on Apple TV started working after I contacted them and I'm in Utah. :-)

Good to know.  How did you contact them?  I'm a long time user but am always perplexed about how I can report things to apple in a way that is noticed.
