Q: itunes is currently unavailable

My Apple TV 3 has been playing up for a few days, possibly since the latest update - not sure.

Basically, i can no longer play any purchased TV/movies or iTunes Match music via the Apple TV (still fine via my other Apple devices - Mac, iPad 2, iPhone 4S) and the following message appears, accompanied with a black screen and yellow triangle "iTunes is currently unavailable. Try again later."

I've searched the forms boards and found a bunch of possible solutions that haven't worked: reset and/or restart Apple TV, Sign out and back in to iTunes on both the Apple TV and my Mac, switched Dolby Digital from Auto, On and Off - nothing has worked.

Could this be an Apple server authentication issue? On purchased movies and TV, it's at the authentication stage that things seem to stop.

Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated. Right now, iTunes Match and Apple TV aren't doing the job I paid for.

Might as well ad my name to this list of NOT working.  Dawn of the planet of the apes.  I click play, and it goes to loading, then authenticating, and then straight to iTunes is currently unavailable.  Try again later.

I've tried rebooting my modem/router.  Resetting the apple tv to original settings.  And still same issue.  netflix streams fine.  HBO GO streams fine.  But my movies that I bought will not stream.  I downloaded the movie just fine to macbook pro and it plays fine on it.  So, kind miffed at what is going on here.

I am also having this issue, it started within the last 2 weeks or so. Today it ruined my evening as I purchased guardians of the galaxy while out, looking forward to coming home and watching it with the missus..... then I had this issue. We ended up watching some old film on Netflix

Well, I saw a lot of posting about this problem and it apparently went on for days and Apple Support hasn't done anything about it. I too got an email saying they will personally reply to my email within 48 hours. Well, I had a different problem couple days ago and sent an email and I never got a personal response but I did get a generic template. So, I wasn't going to sit around and twiddle my thumbs especially seeing all these posts. So, naturally, I shifted my blames to my iPad since AirPlay failed on my iPad and they are related to Apple TV. So, I used Support Chat for iPad and of course, I followed through the questionnaire and they have determined the problem is with Apple TV side and contacted someone on that side. If you can't get through, try Matthew Thomas4 workaround. He might be right about this. I re-posted his posting here. Try it and let us know if that helps.

Still down in Utah.   I still believe the issue is tied to users who have mac.com and me.com address fields in their apple ID's.  Apple TV uses the older field even when you type the iCloud.com email address, and this might be causing inconstancies in the authorization process since some web services use username@icloud.com and some use the legacy addresses such as username@mac.com.

I tried using my daughters Apple ID which was created recently using only the iCloud.com schema (we are using family sharing) and it works fine.  I think it is just an issue for legacy users and the way that Apple TV reassigns your Apple ID from the newer variety to the older kind.

Yes, technical support have acknowledged that the problem is in Apple's back end.

We didn't have any mac.com or me.com addresses.

    Still broken in San Francisco.

Still broken in Iowa City, US.

'iTunes is currently unavailable Try again later' after attempting to authenticate.

Both apple tvs the same. Very old account - not mac or me.com.

We also have problems streaming from computer to apple tv over airplay. Streams for a few seconds, then stops and complains about DRM stuff. This started at exactly the same time as the streaming authentication thing.

Makes me think the whole thing is probably a DRM issue. Any content that is without DRM plays fine.

Well - It's 7:22pm CST and it's still not working in Dallas TX.  I noticed it only yesterday, so I can't say how long it hasn't been working for me.  It's been a couple of weeks since I used either Apple TV to watch Apple purchased content.

I'm in the boat with the guy above who convinced his wife that Apple TV is the future.  RIght now she keeps calling it "Stupid Future."

I just noticed the 5pm post before mine that said he logged out and in and it's working.  Tried it.  No joy.  Still down.

Add me to the list of unhappy people unable to access purchased movies on ATV.  Exact same problem as been descried by countless people.  It's so strange because we can all play the special features, access other features on ATV such as Youtube and Netflix...but only have problems when we go to PLAY the purchased movie.  Maybe I'm becoming a conspiracy theorist...but I smell something sinister.  Something has happened and the fact that no one is willing to address on the forum suggests that a larger problem exists  I'm quickly losing faith in the whole CLOUD idea...and am becoming more and more reluctant to store anything important digitally. And frankly...I'm done with Apple.  Honestly, I have an iPhone which I no longer like...my Mac Air is not nearly as cool as other laptops, and now even my ATV doesn't work.  The only thing keeping me around are the hundreds of songs I've purchased to play on my Apple devices.  For the record...I have spoken to Apple Support - and went through the same insulting exercise of "did you unplug the device, restart the device...it sounds like a problem with YOUR network, etc."  Finally I was referred to a tech specialist in Austin, TX...who confirmed that the problem was known and being addressed.  She then referred me to a SENIOR tech specialist who claims she tried to call me (though I have no record of receiving a phone call on my iPhone), and emailed that they are looking into it.  Shocked that it has taken this long to fix...and that there is NO word about this anywhere.  I called the local Apple Store today and they had not heard a thing about this.

This was happening at my parents home. I just got to my house and the exact same thing. What really bothers me though is the fact that the movie is completely cached. I only have 30min left to watch and "iTunes Unavailable". Is this not the dumbest thing? What, does that mean that Apple TV periodically checks if your authorized to view the movie while the movie is playing and cuts you off of the movie if their server goes down. The entire movie is cached, why on earth can't I play it. So stupid!

Apple this situation is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.. I want my money back on my Itunes movie purchase..I expect to be able to playback my movies..this fault is an absolute embarrassment to your company and your Apple TV service. A social night at our house was ruined because of this fault and as I can read on the threads we weren't the only ones.Your level of customer service is also below par..get this, rang Apple support after waiting 18-20 mins on phone.. the Apple customer rep asked me how do you spell the word "Phoenix" are they serious?? how did they get their job when they couldn't even spell a simple major US City?...the amateur level of customer service displayed by Apple over the past week over this issue has been appalling...to the Apple Tech heads ..PLEASE fix this problem or REFUND our purchases..
