Sync smart folders, events & faces between computers

I have an iMac and a MBA. I travel a lot and have a lot of photos's.

I have my iPhoto library on my iMac (more space) but I want to work on the library while I'm traveling. I might add new photos. I certainly want to assign photographs to events. I want to tag photo's to places and faces. However there is no point in me doing this while traveling if it does not sync back to my iMac iPhoto library.

How can I best manage my photo library from two locations, on two computers.

I have signed up to the iCloud service, I am getting photos sharing between computers but all the organization I've done on the iMac iPhoto Library is not coming over to my MBA.

Any guidance? thanks

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Right now, iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is only available on your mobile devices, iPad, iPhone, iPod. It is a way to store all your photos in iCloud and to sync all edits, albums, favorite tags to all devices, see this link: iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ

The corresponding application Photos for the Mac is still under development. It is announced to be released early next year.

If you wait a bit, you will be able to do what you want in a few month.

To see your iCloud Photo Library (Beta) from a Mac, use the Photos.app on the iCloud webpage:

https://www.icloud.com

or, if you want to upload to iCloud Photo Library (Beta), use

https://beta.icloud.com

iPhoto on your Macs cannot merge photo libraries. The big brother Aperture could do it for your iPhoto Libraries from your from your MBA and iMac.

Or use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to transfer events and albums from one iPhoto Library to another. You can download it here:

iPhoto Library Manager

Thanks for your comments. But I'm confused. on my iMac I can drag photo's into the shared 'icloud' folder and they appear on the MBA - is that not icloud?! No iphone/ipad involvement..... I that I'm aware of..!

I am looking forwards to the new photos for Mac and perhaps have to wait for that to come out in order to solve the dilemma. Are there any details of the program online?

thanks

That is iCloud Drive (iCloud Drive FAQ). iCloud drive is for syncing single documents between devices, and it will also sync single photos, but not a photo library.

iCloud Photo library (Beta) is a full fledged photo library in iCloud, just like if you had your iPhoto library stored in iCloud. if you create albums or adjust photos, these changes sync across all devices. And the edits are lossless. Adjust a photo on the iPad, and revert the photo back to the original on the iPhone. This cloud-based photo library will be available early next year.

Are you shooting RAW or JPEG? What you can do while waiting, is create only small iPhoto libraries on your MBP, a new one for each travel event. You can export JPEGS with "File > Export" in a very high quality from iPhoto, with captions, keywords, and places included. To include the ratings on export and faces. add keywords 5, 4, etc, and face names as keywords.

This way, you can export each even to a folder, with all your metadata included and import the the folders as events on your iMac.
