How do I set up my old gen TC with FiOS G1100 router?

We just switched from Comcast to FiOS yesterday. With Comcast, it was simple for me to set up my TC as router. I am being told that I cannot do the same set up with FiOS - that the G1100 has to be the router. If that is true, it's no big deal because I am pleased with the performance and security of the G1100 so far. I really just want to set up my TC to do my backups and am not sure where to start. I am not an IT person, but can usually get through most set ups. 😉

Reset the TC to factory.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Plug the TC into the router.. if you haven't already..

Run through the airport utility on your computer or ipad etc.. and setup the TC.

It should naturally set itself to bridge mode.. and make it available for backups over your network however you are connected.

Wireless setup is up to you. You have choice of 1. Wireless Off in the TC.. 2. Wireless Off in the FIOS.. 3. Wireless on in both, but different setups.. 4. Wireless on in both identical setups...

The last 4. is called roaming.. it is the easiest setup.. simply set wireless in the TC to the same SSID=Wireless NAME as the G1100, Security = WPA2 Personal and same password as the G1100. The client devices will then connect to whichever wireless is best.

If you do this do try and separate the two devices at least a few feet.. maybe if you have a poor wireless spot in the house an ethernet link to that area would be superb.

See how you go.. ask anything if it is missing the details you need.
