Q: Yosemite not starting-just gray screen

I am not having much luck installing Yosemite.  Started with I-Mac with Lion (lots of memory etc).  First install failed or locked up.  Accidentally backed up to a 4-year old edition of Snow leopard.  Finally loaded Snow Leopard from the install disk.  Downloaded Yosemite again, started the installation.  After finishing the install, the screen went gray.  No keyboard response.  Cursor is active.  External Time Machine backup disk has been active for 8+ hours.  I may have left the auto backup on.  How to best regain control and see if Yosemite loaded and started properly?  Unplug or turn off time machine?  Keyboard methods to shut down time machine (assuming that the system responds to keyboard?    Or just restart using the main power key?   Assistance appreciated.

You left out "/Users". Whether "JOHNSBIGMAC" is really your user name, I don't know. That's where the user name should be.

    Linc:

Sorry.  I entered the correct sequence, but failed to show properly what I had entered.

The entry shows:  Volumes/2014-11-14-0/Users/JOHNSBIGMAC/Library/Mail   where JOHNSBIGMAC is the name of my home folder.  The response is folder not found.

If I delete Mail from the string and just look for Library, i get the same message:  Folder cannot be found.

Would the library folder on this back up of my 14 Nov 2014 system be somewhere else?  I believe the

    at that time as 10.8.5

    Try this:

    /snapshot-time/volume-name/Users/user-name/Library/Mail

The snapshot time should be filled in automatically when you enter the initial /. The other components of the path should be autocompleted when you start to type them.

    Linc:

Progress..up to a point.  I have a mailbox folder on my desktop with all my Nov 14 mail boxes in it.  7 GB.  However, when I do the mail/import new mailboxes, the process comes up and says that will be found in a new mailbox import-2.  That mail box does not seem to exist or I cannot not locate it even using the search function in Mail.  I would just add a select number of the numerous mail boxes in the desktop folder, but the application will not allow me to open the folder.  It just appears to import the entire folder, but nothing shows up, even if i wait and hour or two before hitting the DONE button.

Thank you again for showing me the way.

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.

In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

If you fail to uncover the missing mailboxes, continue.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.

A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:

              Envelope Index

              ExternalUpdates.storedata

Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.

Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.

Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

    Linc:

Sorry to be slow on these replies.  Taking care of my wife who had surgery yesterday.

I am able to see the Library and mail folders at all times now.  Once exposed, they seem to stay exposed.

I followed your directions moving and trashing folders in Mail data.  It appeared that mail was importing the folder of mail boxes that I had on my desktop from Nov 14, 2014.  The activity bar was active and it took about 18 minutes.

However, the Nov 14 mail boxes cannot be found nor have any of the existing (2012) mail boxes been updated.   I have carefully looked at all show/hide folders and expanded all folders that have the arrow button.  I closed and reopened mail and restarted the computer--same non result.

Not sure if it is important, but my main mail account where all mail boxes are listed was called "Import" from a previous computer migration.  I changed the name of this area and repeated the process of trying to import the folder of Nov 14 mailboxes.  Same result.  They do not seem to be imported.

Thanks for your continued working on this with me.

Without being able to see what you're doing, it's not really possible for me to know what's happening. The description you've given doesn't fit any pattern that I recognize, and I feel like there's a misunderstanding somewhere. I think your best option is to make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store for someone to help you in person. It's a free service.
