Command Control Space and then click on the emoticon in the bottom row; you can also drag the window a bit if you want it to stay open.

Thank you, FoxFifth, that did the trick.

Thank You!
I've read everything I can find online about this issue and am still stumped. I've accessed the emoticons through both the "Command Control Space" method and the "Edit - Special Characters" method and I can see the Emoji palette. What I can't do is APPLY them to my text. The instructions have said to click on the symbol you want and it will appear in your text. Not in mine! And there is no "Insert" button. What am I doing wrong?
Try double clicking.
WENDY - I am having the same problem. My MacBook Air is brand new, and although I also have the iPad and iPhone, and have no problems with emojis on them, I am not able to apply them to email or text on this computer. Just wondering if your issue was solved, and if so, how? Thank you - 🙂
FoxFifth's answer above helped me. It's not elegant, but it works.

Hi
I had exactly the same problem. I stumbled upon something that worked for me.
Don't leave a space where you want to enter the emoticon. Place your cursor right next to the last letter that you have typed, then double-click the appropriate symbol
