Under Yosemite iMac will not stay connected to ethernet network

Mac OS X 10.10.1

When attached to Netgear Prosafe gigabit unmanaged switch (circa 2007) iMac Retina, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro will not stay connected to Apple Airport managed ethernet LAN. With Sys Prefs Network panel open I can watch the ethernet connect and disconnect on a periodic basis (about every 15 secs!). When same machines are connected to ethernet ports on the Airport itself, connections are steady and permanent. I suspect incompatibility with networking protocol used by Netgear but assuming their protocol is standard the incompatibility must be in Yosemite. Did NOT have this problem under Mavericks with any of my machines.

Is my only alternative to order a new gigabit switch? If so, have protocols changed in the intervening 6 years such that Yosemite is not compatible with older switches?

Six +, Mac OS X (10.6.4), MBPs, Mac Pro, iMacs

Oh- understood. I have gone to wireless with most of my tech and made do with the 3 ports on my airport. Also have ordered a newer model of netgear switch to see if the hardware has changed. Will comment on success or lack thereof when it is online in a few days. It would certainly be sad if we have to downgrade to megabit speed to run wired with 10.10.1!

Well, my 6 year old netgear gigabit switch must have been partially failing because when I replaced it with the current model (same specs, same model name, but sold as an updated model??) things are now going fine. Getting gigabit network speeds on all computers and 100% reliable connection. Guess it was just a coincidence that my Yosemite update and the switch failure occurred at the same time.
