Why does my Amazon Basics Lightning cable suddenly show that it is "not supported" with an error message after the most recent ios 8.1.1 update? It has worked for more than a year perfectly before this... it just started the error message this past week?

Maybe it's the cable. Do you get the same message when using the Apple supplied cable? Also, sometimes you'll get the message if the phone's lightning port is dirty with pocket lint or such. Use a toothpick or small brush to clean out the port.
I have the same issue on my iPad 4 and iPhone 5s both after the last 8.1.1 OS update - my third party cables are now throwing a 'not certified' error and can't even be used for charging.
Mine are now doing this too 😟
